Release behavior and cytotoxicity of captopril-intercalated layered double hydroxide for an antihypertensive drug delivery system

Monica Limau Jadam et al.

Summary: The intercalation of the antihypertensive drug captopril into a zinc-aluminum-layered double hydroxide (ZAL) carrier was successfully achieved through co-precipitation. The resulting ZAC material showed high loading percentage of captopril and successful intercalation. The release behavior of captopril from the ZAC nanocomposite followed a pseudo-second order kinetic model. Cytotoxicity study revealed the lower toxicity of the ZAC nanohybrid compared to the pristine captopril drug.

Efficient regeneration of the crystal structure and Li plus adsorption capacity of Li/Al layered double hydroxides

Haodong Zhou et al.

Summary: This study proposes a high c(LiCl)-based hydrothermal cultivation method for the structural damage regeneration of Li/Al-LDHs. The crystal structure was regenerated and small fragments of gibbsite were reassembled into rose petal-shaped Li/Al-LDHs. The analysis of Li+ adsorption kinetics and isotherm reveals that while the structural damage of Li/Al-LDHs has no impact on the mode or rate of adsorption, it does have a substantial effect on the adsorption capacity. This study provides a reuse method of Li/Al-LDHs.

Comparison of Zn-Al and Mg-Al layered double hydroxides for adsorption of perfluorooctanoic acid

Jingwan Huo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of two types of LDH materials for the removal of PFAS, finding that Zn-Al LDH showed higher efficiency and better adsorption capacity for PFOA compared to Mg-Al LDH. The presence of natural organic matter had minimal impact on PFOA removal by Zn-Al LDH, while sulfate severely inhibited PFOA adsorption, suggesting that electrostatic interactions may play a primary role in the adsorption mechanism onto LDHs for PFAS removal.

Red Fluorescence of Eu3+-Doped ZnAl-LDH Response to Intercalation and Release of Ibuprofen

Yufeng Chen et al.

Summary: The study focused on the red fluorescence response of Eu3+-doped ZnAl-LDH to the intercalation and release of ibuprofen (IBU). The release of IBU showed an initial rapid release followed by a slow release in simulated intestinal medium, and the red fluorescence of the Eu3+-doped ZnAl-LDH was reduced after IBU intercalation but recovered upon release. This fluorescent responsiveness could be a useful signal for detecting the delivery and release of the drug.

Summary: This article provides an overview of LDH-based biomedical implants, including their materials, preparation methods, properties, and applications. LDH has excellent biocompatibility and morphology, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. However, careful selection of materials and combination strategies are crucial for optimizing functionality. Systematic research, especially in the interaction between LDH and cells/tissues, is still needed to transform its potential into real-world applications.

Efficient Exfoliation of Layered Double Hydroxides; Effect of Cationic Ratio, Hydration State, Anions and Their Orientations

Jayakumar Karthikeyan et al.

Summary: The exfoliation ability of nitrate based Mg-Al LDH into single or multilayer nanosheets is strongly influenced by nitrate anion orientation and layer charge. Superior exfoliation was observed for nitrate LDH compared to clays with carbonate, sulfate, chloride, or iodide as charge balancing anions, with an optimum composition for single nanosheet exfoliation at x≈0.25. The study also found that particles with platelet-like morphology exfoliated more effectively, suggesting that hydrothermal treatment may enhance exfoliation yields.
