An overview of the recent advances in flame retarded poly(lactic acid)

Li Baochai et al.

Summary: Poly(lactic acid) (PLA), derived from crops, has great potential in electronics, electrical, and automotive industries due to its biodegradability and good physical and mechanical properties. However, its flammability and melt dripping limit its application. In recent years, research on flame retardant PLA has flourished, with focus on phosphorus-based, phosphorus-nitrogen-based, bio-based, nanoparticles, and intumescent flame retardants, as well as their combinations. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the development of PLA flame retardants, including their efficiency and impact on thermal and mechanical properties. Additionally, future prospects for flame-retardant PLA are briefly summarized.

Achieving simultaneously toughening and flame-retardant modification of poly(lactic acid) by in-situ formed cross-linked polyurethane and reactive blending with ammonium polyphosphate

Meng Ma et al.

Summary: This paper presents a method for preparing flame-retardant and toughened PLA composites using reactive blending with in-situ formed polyurethane and ammonium polyphosphate. The addition of glycerin as a cross-linking agent improves the toughness of the composites and reduces their dropping behavior during combustion. The composites with 5% APP and 10% cross-linking degree exhibit balanced performance, achieving a V-2 level of vertical combustion and an elongation at break of about 200%.

Thermal degradation of polylactic acid (PLA)/polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) blends: A systematic review

Mael Kervran et al.

Summary: This review investigates the thermal degradation behavior and mechanism of the biopolyesters polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), and categorizes and summarizes available reports on the thermal degradation of neat PLA and PHB, as well as PLA/PHB blends modified with plasticizers, additives, or crosslinkers. The study finds that the thermal stability of PLA is lower in PLA/PHB blends compared to neat PLA, while PHB exhibits higher thermal stability in PLA/PHB blends. The choice of additive greatly affects the thermal stability of PLA/PHB blends, with processing method and localization of the additive being determining factors.
