Dissolution and reprecipitation of 14H-LPSO structure accompanied by dynamic recrystallization in hot-extruded Mg89Y4Zn2Li5 alloy

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the variation in LPSO structures, dynamic recrystallization, and mechanical performance of Mg89Y4Zn2Li5 alloys fabricated at different extrusion speeds and die angles. It is found that the block 18R LPSO structures elongate while the lamellar 14H LPSO structures dissolve. The hot-extruded alloys exhibit a full DRX microstructure, and the DRX grain size decreases with decreasing extrusion speed and die angle. The Mg89Y4Zn2Li5 alloy achieves an excellent strength-ductility balance at a low extrusion speed and small die angle.

Role of disclinations around kink bands on deformation behavior in Mg-Zn-Y alloys with a long-period stacking ordered phase

Tsubasa Tokuzumi et al.

Summary: The excellent mechanical properties of Mg-Zn-Y alloys with a Mg-based long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase are attributed to the kink bands formed by plastic deformation. This study investigated the strengthening mechanism of kink bands in directionally solidified single-phase LPSO Mg85Zn6Y9 alloys. It was found that the presence of disclinations and dislocation pile-ups contribute to the kink-band strengthening. The study provides insights into the factors responsible for kink-band strengthening in LPSO-phase Mg alloys.

Enhanced oxidation resistance in Mg-Y-Zn-Ho alloys via introducing dense low-oxygen-diffusion Ho2O3 oxide film

Mingyu Fan et al.

Summary: The effect of Ho addition on the oxidation behavior of Mg-Zn-Y-Ho alloys at 500 degrees C in air was investigated. Results showed that the addition of Ho can improve the high-temperature oxidation resistance of Mg-3Y-2Zn-12Ho alloys. With a 12 wt% Ho addition, the parabolic rate constant decreased by 75% compared to alloys without Ho addition. This improvement can be attributed to the formation of dense Ho2O3, which reduces the inward oxygen diffusion coefficient by 3 orders of magnitude compared to Y2O3. Additionally, the addition of Ho in the Mg-Y-Zn alloy maintained excellent tensile properties.

In-situ and ex-situ investigation of deformation behaviors of a dual-phase Mg-Ni-Y alloy

Cheng Liu et al.

Summary: The deformation behaviors of a dual-phase Mg alloy containing α-Mg and 18R-LPSO phases were investigated in this study. The 18R phase, accounting for 11.3 vol.%, contributed to 23.0% of the overall alloy deformation. The coordinated twinning deformation of α-Mg matrix through the slip of basal dislocations and the kinking deformation of Mg slices induced by the 18R phase were observed during the early stage of deformation. At the end of deformation, a large number of T2-type stacking faults were generated, improving the ductility of the alloy. This work provides a novel strategy for designing high-strength and good ductility dual-phase Mg alloys.

Tailoring the microstructural characteristic and improving the corrosion rate of Mg-Gd-Ni alloy by heat treatment with different volume fraction of LPSO phase

Chaoneng Dai et al.

Summary: The microstructure and corrosion behaviors of Mg-Gd-Ni alloys with different LPSO phase volume fractions and heat treatments were studied. After heat treatment, the corrosion rates increased significantly, and they increased with the increase of LPSO phase volume fraction. This may be attributed to the transformation of continuous bulk reticular LPSO phase to discontinuous rod-like phase and the precipitation of lamellar 14 H LPSO phase. These changes altered the corrosion propagation paths and provided more galvanic corrosion points, resulting in a 58.1% increase in the corrosion rate of MgGd3Ni3 alloy.

Simultaneously improving mechanical and anti-corrosion properties of extruded Mg-Al dilute alloy via trace Er addition

Zhi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, trace Er addition was found to synergistically improve the mechanical and anti-corrosion properties of the Mg-1.4Al-0.4Mn-0.4Ca0.3Er alloy. The corrosion rate of the alloy was reduced by one order of magnitude compared to the reference alloy. This improvement was attributed to the reduction in dynamic recrystallization and the formation of stronger strengthening phase particles. The addition of Er also promoted the formation of a less noble Al8Mn4Er phase with effective Fe trapping ability and induced dislocation segregation, leading to reduced micro-galvanic corrosion.

Strength-ductility synergy in Mg98.3Y1.3Ni0.4 alloy processed by high temperature homogenization and rolling

Yucheng Zhou et al.

Summary: A new Mg98.3Y1.3Ni0.4 alloy with good strength-ductility synergy, high ultimate tensile strength, and low work hardening rate has been prepared through high temperature homogenization and rolling. The strength increment in the alloy is attributed to refined grains, broken LPSO phases, and high-density geometrically necessary dislocations. The good ductility and low work hardening rate are due to weak basal texture, activation of non-basal slips with high Schmid factors, and annihilation of high-density dislocations.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the twinning behavior, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) mechanism, and texture evolution of extruded Mg-xBi (x=0.5 wt.%, 2.0 wt.%) alloys during hot compression. The results show that the texture types and intensities are closely related to twinning behavior and DRX mechanism. The formation and variation of {10 (1) over bar2} extension twins dominate the early evolution of texture, while the DRX mechanism plays a greater role as the strain increases.

Solute atom mediated Hall-Petch relations for magnesium binary alloys

Yu Wen et al.

Summary: The solute atom mediated Hall-Petch relations were investigated for Mg-Y, Mg-Al, Mg-Gd, and Mg-Zn alloys at a nominal solute content of 0.35 at.%. It was found that Mg-Y and Mg-Gd exhibited significantly lower Hall-Petch slope (k) values (220 MPa·μm(1/2) and 285 MPa·μm(1/2), respectively) compared to Mg-Al and Mg-Zn (324 MPa·μm(1/2) and 322 MPa·μm(1/2), respectively) under compression along the extrusion direction. The addition of Zn or Al led to a strong basal texture and predominantly basal slip deformation, while the addition of Gd or Y resulted in a weakened texture and activation of both {10 (1) over bar2} twinning and basal slip. This difference in deformation mechanisms contributed to the lower k values in Mg-Y and Mg-Gd alloys.

Developing a low-alloyed fine-grained Mg alloy with high strength-ductility based on dislocation evolution and grain boundary segregation

Zhi Zhang et al.

Summary: A new low-alloyed Mg-2Sm-0.8Mn-0.6Ca-0.5Zn alloy is prepared by low-temperature and low-speed extrusion, which exhibits high strength but low ductility. After annealing, the alloy shows both high strength and high ductility due to the effective inhibition of grain growth by grain boundary co-segregation and decreased dislocation density. The evolution of immovable long dislocations towards new grain boundaries is a key factor for the remarkable increase of ductility in the annealed alloy.

α-Mg/LPSO (Long-Period Stacking Ordered) phase interfaces as obstacles against dislocation slip in as-cast Mg-Zn-Y alloys

Tsuyoshi Mayama et al.

Summary: The influence of alpha-Mg/LPSO phase interfaces on the flow stress of as-cast Mg-Zn-Y alloys was experimentally and numerically evaluated. The results showed that the flow stresses of Mg-Zn-Y alloys with LPSO phase fractions ranging from 40 to 85% were higher than those of single phase alpha-Mg or LPSO alloys. Comparison between Mg-Zn-Y alloys and Mg-Zn-Y-Zr alloys revealed that the flow stresses of Mg-Zn-Y alloys with LPSO phase fractions of 25 and 40% were insensitive to grain size, while the flow stress of alpha-Mg single-phase alloy showed clear grain size dependence. Crystal plasticity analysis successfully reproduced the observed stress-strain behavior, indicating that alpha-Mg/LPSO phase interfaces are effective obstacles against dislocation slip in two-phase Mg alloys containing LPSO phase.
