A Crystalline Monomeric Phosphaborene

Etienne A. LaPierre et al.

Summary: We synthesized the monomeric phosphaborene Ar*P=B(TMP) (2) with 2-coordinate phosphorus and boron centers, which has the shortest reported PB bond length of 1.741(3) angstrom. Computational examination revealed the presence of a classical pi bond and a large Wiberg bond index of 1.9707, suggesting double bond character. The low reactivity of compound 2 is rationalized based on analysis of frontier molecular orbitals and steric considerations.

Tuning the Electronic Properties of Main-Group Species by N-Heterocyclic Vinyl (NHV) Scaffolds

Rajendra S. Ghadwal

Summary: This paper discusses the tuning of structure and properties of main-group species (E) by controlling pi-conjugation and/or pi-donation using classical N-heterocyclic vinyl (NI-IV) ligands. By selecting appropriate carbene units, the electronic structure of derived species can be precisely controlled, resulting in stable solid materials.

Advances and recent trends in dipnictenes chemistry

Lothar Weber et al.

Summary: Dipnictenes, molecules with a double bond between two Group 15 elements, have made remarkable progress in recent years. The introduction of new ligand systems and non-carbon donor substituents has led to the discovery of numerous dipnictenes with diverse properties. Stable N-heterocyclic carbenes and other singlet carbenes have also been utilized in the synthesis of related unsaturated species. A comprehensive understanding of the structure, bonding, and reactivity of dipnictenes and the influence of substituents on their properties is crucial for advancements in the field.

Structural Snapshots in Reversible Phosphinidene Transfer:Synthetic, Structural, and Reaction Chemistry of a Sn= P DoubleBond

Malte Fischer et al.

Summary: Amido-substituted stannylenes reacted with phospha-Wittig reagents result in the formation of P-donor stabilized stannylenes featuring four-membered Sn,C,P,Pheterocycles. The structure of these systems in thesolid state can be tuned by increasing steric loading, leading to successive P-P bond lengthening, Sn-P contraction, and even complete P-to-Sn transfer. The resulting stannaphosphene features a polar Sn???P double bond, as determined by structural and computational studies.

Side-on coordination of diphosphorus to a mononuclear iron center

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: The diagonal relationship between phosphorus and carbon in the periodic table suggests that the diatomic diphosphorus molecule (P-2) should have similar properties to acetylene (HC CH). In this study, a mononuclear iron complex featuring P-2 coordination was isolated and characterized, revealing similar electronic demands but different reactivity profiles compared to acetylene coordination.

A Free Phosphaborene Stable at Room Temperature

Jiancheng Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the successful isolation of crystalline free phosphaborenes through the introduction of a p-donating and a p-accepting substituent, as well as the use of bulky flanking arene rings, at room temperature. The resulting phosphaborene molecule features a PB double bond consisting of a conventional s bond and a delocalized p bond. Preliminary reactivity studies showed that this molecule can readily undergo (cyclo)addition reactions with various compounds, indicating its potential applications.

Highly Twisted Azobenzene Ligand Causes Crystals to Continuously Roll in Sunlight

Amymarie K. Bartholomew et al.

Summary: The direct conversion of solar energy to mechanical work is a more efficient energy solution for the future. Researchers have discovered a new crystal material that can continuously roll under sunlight, driven by blue-light reactions. This finding introduces a new strategy for manipulating the electronic properties of chromophores and demonstrates the ability to convert solar energy to continuous physical motion using easily accessible molecular systems.

Main Group Multiple Bonds for Bond Activations and Catalysis

Catherine Weetman

Summary: This Minireview discusses the rapid expansion of molecular main group multiple bonds after the discovery of breaking the double-bond rule. While these compounds show potential in small molecule activation and mimicking transition metals, their catalytic behavior is somewhat limited. The review aims to highlight the potential of these complexes in catalytic applications and further functionalizations, serving as versatile tools for modern synthetic chemists.

Summary: Addition of various phosphines to two-coordinate nickel species leads to a series of terminal phosphido nickel complexes with unique geometries. Smaller NHCs and phosphines facilitate the formation of bis-phosphido complexes, while DFT calculations show that P-P activation can be achieved through unconventional phosphine adducts.

Imino(silyl)disilenes: application in versatile bond activation, reversible oxidation and thermal isomerization

Richard Holzner et al.

Summary: Two novel disilenes with N-heterocyclic imino and trialkylsilyl groups are reported. Compound 2 exhibits high stability and reactivity, undergoing (E/Z) isomerization and showing reversible redox behavior. Furthermore, selective thermal rearrangement of 2 at higher temperatures results in the formation of unique cage compound 8 and A(2)Si= SiB2-type disilene 9.
