Natural carbon mineralization and its control on the geochemical evolution of coal-based aquifers in the Salt Range, Punjab, Pakistan

Noshin Masood et al.

Summary: Hydrochemical analysis of the Salt Range in Punjab revealed alkaline groundwater in the eastern (ESR) and Trans-Indus (TSR) regions, while the Central Salt Range (CSR) had acidic to moderately alkaline water. The dominant hydrochemical facies varied among the regions, with Ca-Mg-HCO3, Ca-Mg-Cl, and Ca-Cl-2 being dominant in ESR and CSR, while TSR had Ca-Mg-Cl, Ca-Cl-2, Cl-, and mixed types of Ca-Mg-SO4. The presence of Fe and Zn in groundwater wells was reported in all three regions. The geochemical evolution model indicated that local geology and coal mining activities drove salinization, and natural weathering may offer a solution to mitigate the environmental impact of coal mining.

Groundwater fluoride across the Punjab plains of Pakistan and India: Distribution and underlying mechanisms

Junaid Ali Khattak et al.

Summary: Chronic exposure to well-water with high concentrations of fluoride has serious health consequences, especially in rural areas of South Asia. A study in the Punjab plains of Pakistan and India found that 9% of wells had elevated levels of fluoride above the WHO guideline. Laboratory analysis and field data suggest a correlation between high fluoride levels and specific water chemistry parameters. The study also indicates that salinization from irrigation may contribute to the high fluoride levels in groundwater.

Contrasting behaviors of groundwater arsenic and fluoride in the lower reaches of the Yellow River basin, China: Geochemical and modeling evidences

Wen Qiao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the spatial distributions of high arsenic and fluoride concentrations in groundwater in the lower reaches of the Yellow River basin, Henan Province, China, using bivariate statistical analyses and geochemical simulations. Results showed contrasting distributions of high arsenic and fluoride groundwater with little overlap, along with significant negative correlations between groundwater arsenic concentrations and oxidation-reduction potential values, and positive correlations with NH4+ and Fe(II) concentrations. Geochemical calculations supported that groundwater fluoride enrichment was governed by the extent of fluorite dissolution, while groundwater arsenic mobility was explained by the different solubility of Fe(III) oxides.

Groundwater fluoride concentrations in the watershed sedimentary basin of Quetta Valley, Pakistan

Taimoor Shah Durrani et al.

Summary: The study investigated the litho-geochemical characteristics of low and high fluoride groundwater along with hydrological processes to understand its genesis and enrichment mechanisms in a watershed sedimentary basin. The groundwater showed variations in fluoride concentration and different cationic and anionic dominance patterns, indicating changes in water chemistry as it flows from mountain foot towards the synclinal basin. The findings suggest that fluoride enrichment in groundwater is influenced by complex geological features and processes such as depth, residence time, and geomorphological units hosting the aquifer.
