Lake Erie fish safe to eat yet afflicted by algal hepatotoxins

Rene S. Shahmohamadloo et al.

Summary: Toxic harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a pervasive threat to fish populations, with substantial risks to fish health and recruitment. Although microcystins pose low risks to human health from fish consumption, the unresolved toxicological impacts on wildlife species raise uncertainties about the biodiversity and functioning of aquatic ecosystems. This field study conducted in Lake Erie highlights the need to acknowledge and address the significant threats posed by HABs.

Response mechanisms of Chlorella sorokiniana to microplastics and PFOA stress: Photosynthesis, oxidative stress, extracellular polymeric substances and antioxidant system

Zhilin Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxicity and defense mechanisms of Chlorella sorokiniana (C. sorokiniana) under exposure to polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The findings revealed that PS-MPs primarily inhibited photosynthesis through shading effect, while PFOA mainly induced oxidative stress. The co-exposure of PFOA and PS-MPs aggravated the harmful effects and activated defense mechanisms in C. sorokiniana, including the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances and the activation of the antioxidant system.

Trophic behaviors of PFOA and its alternatives perfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic acids (PFECAs) in a coastal food web

Yanan Li et al.

Summary: The production and usage of perfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic acids (PFECAs) as alternatives to legacy poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have increased recently. However, little is known about the bioaccumulation and trophic behaviors of emerging PFECAs in coastal ecosystems. This study investigated the bioaccumulation and trophodynamics of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and its substitutes (PFECAs) in Laizhou Bay, China. The dominant compounds in the ecosystem of Laizhou Bay were hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (HFPO-TrA), perfluoro-2-methoxyacetic acid (PFMOAA) and PFOA.

Bioaccumulation and toxicity of perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctanesulfonate in marine algae Chlorella sp. br

Wenqian Mao et al.

Summary: The growth, photosynthetic activity, oxidative stress, and bioaccumulation of marine algae Chlorella sp. were investigated after exposure to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate acid (PFOS). The results showed that low doses of PFOA and PFOS stimulated algal reproduction, while high doses inhibited growth. PFOA and PFOS damaged cell membranes, disrupted photosynthesis, triggered oxidative stress, and inhibited algal growth. PFOS showed higher toxicity and bioaccumulation than PFOA.

Impairment of human dopaminergic neurons at different developmental stages by perfluoro-octanoic acid (PFOA) and differential human brain areas accumulation of perfluoroalkyl chemicals

Andrea Di Nisio et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bioaccumulation of specific PFASs in different brain areas, with a focus on the brainstem region rich in dopaminergic neurons. Results showed that exposure to PFOA had a significant impact on the most sensitive stage of neural dopaminergic differentiation, affecting the expression of key markers and proteins involved in dopamine maturation and reuptake. The findings suggest the need for further investigations into the potential risk assessment of PFAS chemicals.

Phosphorus internal loading and sediment diagenesis in a large eutrophic lake (Lake Chaohu, China)

Chunhui Yang et al.

Summary: Sediment phosphorus release plays a crucial role in controlling eutrophication in Lake Chaohu, with higher release rates in the west region compared to the east. Long-term release is dominated by the remobilization of iron-bound phosphorus, while short-term release is mainly from legacy phosphorus in surface sediments.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term temporal-spatial trends of PFAAs in Taihu Lake and predicted future PFAA concentrations. The results showed that the northern region had the highest PFAA contamination and the wet season had higher and more uniform concentrations. Temporal dependence of chlorophyll α-nutrient relationships in Lake Taihu: Drivers and management implications

Wei Zou et al.

Summary: Eutrophication and algal blooms are significant environmental challenges for lakes worldwide. This study examined the relationships between nutrient levels (total nitrogen and total phosphorus) and chlorophyll a in Chinese Lake Taihu from 2005 to 2020. The results showed robust linear relationships, and recommended nutrient thresholds for the lake. Additionally, the study found that factors such as temperature, water level, wind speed, nitrogen to phosphorus ratio, and grazing influenced the sensitivity of chlorophyll a to nutrients, and atmospheric stilling was identified as a key climatic factor affecting algal blooms in Lake Taihu.

Characterization of internal phosphorus loading in the sediment of a large eutrophic lake (Lake Taihu, China)

Hongbin Yin et al.

Summary: This paper provides a detailed investigation of sediment internal P loading in Lake Taihu and its role in algal dominated zones (ADZs) and grass dominated zones (GDZs). The results show that ADZ sediments have higher levels of total P and mobile P fraction compared to GDZ sediments. The study also identifies ADZ as a hotspot for P, with high concentrations of DGT-measured P. Sediment microbial composition is found to be closely related to different P fractions in the sediment. The findings highlight the importance of considering the sediment composition and different management strategies for combating internal P loading in ADZ and GDZ.

Transcriptional pathways linked to fetal and maternal hepatic dysfunction caused by gestational exposure to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) or hexafluoropropylene oxide-dimer acid (HFPO-DA or GenX) in CD-1 mice

Bevin E. Blake et al.

Summary: In this study, transcriptomic analysis revealed that per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have hepatotoxic effects on both maternal and fetal livers, affecting multiple biological pathways. The limited overlap of specific differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the dam and fetus suggests a different stress response of the developing liver to these chemicals.

The cyanobacterium could degrade enrofloxacin and norfloxacin more than sulfadiazine and sulfamethazine. Anti-oxidant mechanisms of Chlorella pyrenoidosa under acute GenX exposure

Xianglin Liu et al.

Summary: GenX, a substitute for perfluorooctanoic acid, has been widely detected in surface water and has potential ecological hazards. Research shows that acute exposure to GenX inhibits the growth of Chlorella pyrenoidosa and damages its photosynthetic system, but the up-regulation of related genes provides an antioxidant mechanism. This study provides new insights into the antioxidant capacity to cope with the oxidative stress caused by acute GenX exposure.
