Copper, zinc, and chromium accumulation in aquatic macrophytes from a highly polluted river of Argentina

Roberto Jose Maria Serafini et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess Cu, Zn, and Cr pollution in the Matanza-Riachuelo river in Argentina and to evaluate tolerance strategies and toxic effects in aquatic macrophytes. The results showed that the highest concentrations of heavy metals were found in the lower basin of the river, while the upper basin was mainly affected by lithogenic origin metals. Sagittaria montevidensis adapted to the polluted environment through heavy metal exclusion mechanisms, while Eichhornia crassipes exhibited tolerance through root compartmentalization.

Adsorption of copper (II) and cadmium (II) ions by in situ doped nano-calcium carbonate high-intensity chitin hydrogels

Detian Dou et al.

Summary: A novel in-situ-doped nano-calcium carbonate chitin hydrogel was synthesized as an efficient adsorbent for Cu (II) and Cd (II) ions, exhibiting superior mechanical properties and excellent adsorption effects. The maximum adsorption rate of the hydrogel was approximately 96%, and the material showed specific selectivity to Cu (II) adsorption. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed nitrogen and oxygen atoms were involved in chelation with the metal ions, while the composite material exhibited high stability and reproducibility in repeated adsorption cycles.

Summary: The study analyzed plankton community responses to environmental changes in lowland lotic ecosystems, finding that the plankton assemblages could tolerate anthropogenic disturbance, specifically organic pollution and eutrophication. Phytoplankton were dominated by diatoms, chlorophytes, and cyanobacteria, while zooplankton were dominated by Bdelloidea, Brachionidae, and Copepoda nauplii. Both plankton groups showed high maximum tolerance for chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, and metals concentrations.

A Study of Adsorption Behaviour of Cu(II) on Hydroxyapatite-Coated-Limestone/Chitosan Composite

Xilong Peng et al.

Summary: In this experiment, HAp-coated-stone composites/CS were successfully synthesized using chitosan, waste limestone, and diammonium hydrogen phosphate. The addition of chitosan improved the thermal stability of the composite while reducing the specific surface area. These composites showed promising potential in removing Cu (II) from solutions and exhibited good resistance to pH changes. The adsorption mechanism onto the surface of HAp-coated-stone/CS composites was proposed based on the experimental results.
