A comprehensive study of the source, occurrence, and spatio-seasonal dynamics of 12 target antibiotics and their potential risks in a cold semi-arid catchment

Hanyu Ju et al.

Summary: This study measured the seasonal concentrations of 12 antibiotics in the surface waters of the Chagan lake catchment in northeast China and found that these antibiotics were present in most water samples across seasons. The study also identified a correlation between the number of antibiotic resistance genes and compound lipophilicity and half-life. Based on the ecological risks of antibiotics and the relative abundance of ARGs, a hierarchical control priority list of antibiotics was determined, and the reduction and selective use of veterinary antibiotics during the freeze-thaw periods in the Chagan lake catchment were recommended.

Effective degradation of norfloxacin on Ag3PO4/CNTs photoanode: Z-scheme mechanism, reaction pathway, and toxicity assessment

Yihan Lv et al.

Summary: This study synthesized Ag3PO4/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for the photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) degradation of norfloxacin (NOR) and investigated the factors affecting NOR degradation efficiency, achieving a high degradation efficiency under optimal conditions. PEC degradation showed the highest degradation efficiency and a significant synergetic effect compared to photocatalytic and electrocatalytic degradation. The Z-scheme mechanism of Ag3PO4/CNTs was proposed to explain the excellent degradation efficiency and reduction in toxicity of NOR and its intermediates.

The mechanism of uptake and translocation of antibiotics by pak choi (Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis)

Xiaolu Yu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the uptake and translocation of six antibiotics in pak choi, finding that fluoroquinolones had significantly higher accumulation capacity. Roots were found to be the main accumulator of antibiotics, and antibiotic translocation was associated with water transport through xylem vessels controlled by aquaporin activities and transpiration. Overall, the findings provide valuable insights for developing optimal management practices to mitigate antibiotic contamination in vegetables and ensure food safety.

Reclaimed wastewater reuse in irrigation: Role of biofilms in the fate of antibiotics and spread of antimicrobial resistance

M. Brienza et al.

Summary: This study found that reclaimed wastewater associated biofilms contain antibiotic resistance bacteria and genes, which may contribute to the dissemination of antibiotic resistance. While exposure to antibiotics may lead to an increase in resistance genes within biofilms, the composition and diversity of bacterial communities may play a more significant role in resistance selection and propagation.

Unraveling the key driving factors involved in cometabolism enhanced aerobic degradation of tetracycline in wastewater

Xin Qi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the key driving factors involved in the cometabolic degradation of tetracycline by Chlorella pyrenoidosa. The results showed that cometabolism improved the performance of microalgae by enhancing the electron transport chain and catalytic enzyme activities. The cometabolic pathways involved de/hydroxylation, de/hydrogenation, bond cleavage, decarboxylation, and deamination. The study also demonstrated that cometabolism reduced the concentration of various antibiotics in reclaimed water.

Phosphorylation of SWEET sucrose transporters regulates plant root:shoot ratio under drought

Qingchao Chen et al.

Summary: During drought stress, plants increase their root:shoot ratio by enhancing the long-distance sucrose transport, mediated by the phosphorylation of sucrose transporters SWEET11 and 12. This phosphorylation, induced by drought and abscisic acid treatments, improves sugar loading in the phloem and supports enhanced root growth.

Reclaimed wastewater reuse in irrigation: Role of biofilms in the fate of antibiotics and spread of antimicrobial resistance

M. Brienza et al.

Summary: Reclaimed wastewater associated biofilms contain diverse antibiotic resistance genes and mobile genetic elements, with antibiotics partially degraded but still above minimum inhibitory concentrations. The bacterial community composition and diversity are the main factors influencing resistance selection and propagation in biofilms. Increase in certain genera known to harbor antibiotic resistance genes in reclaimed wastewater exposed to antibiotics suggests the importance of maintaining high diversity to limit resistance dissemination among planktonic bacteria.

Irrigation using hybrid constructed wetland treated domestic sewage: Uptake of phthalic acid esters and antibiotics by Ipomoea aquatica forssk

Xiaoyan Tang et al.

Summary: Irrigation with treated wastewater has been promoted globally to address water scarcity. This study found that hybrid constructed wetlands can effectively reduce the transfer of targeted contaminants to soil and plants, with HCW2 being the most efficient. Different properties of phthalic acid esters and antibiotics resulted in varying accumulation patterns in the environment. While the irrigated Ipomoea aquatica presented minor health risks, further safety evaluation is necessary for widespread use of HCWs treated wastewater for irrigation purposes.

Irrigation with secondary municipal-treated wastewater: Potential effects, accumulation of typical antibiotics and grain quality responses in rice (Oryza sativa L)

Qing Yan et al.

Summary: The study found that the accumulation of antibiotics in rice plants irrigated with treated wastewater was limited, and the studied antibiotics were not detected in rice grains (edible parts). Rice plants have the ability to withstand certain antibiotics and grow in a healthy manner due to their capacity to maintain reasonably normal photosynthesis activity and to elevate antioxidative defenses. The highest antibiotic concentration (500 ?g/L) did not reduce the processing quality of the rice grain, but it enhanced the cooking and eating quality.

Effect of iron plaque on antibiotic uptake and metabolism in water spinach (Ipomoea aquatic Forsk.) grown in hydroponic culture

Jun Tang et al.

Summary: Iron plaque (IP) in water spinach was found to have an impact on the uptake and translocation of tetracyclines (TCs), with the amount of IP positively correlating with the bioconcentration factor of TCs in roots and the accumulation of TC metabolites. The concentration of TCs in aerial tissues was significantly lower than in roots, showing a negative correlation with the translocation factor of TCs. The study suggests that metabolism of TCs in aquatic plants should not be overlooked when assessing the risk of antibiotic pollution.

Summary: Trace levels of sulfonamide antibiotics in reclaimed water pose challenges for completely removing them when restoring flows in dried rivers. This study found that biodegradation was the main removal process for sulfonamides, with some removal also occurring through sediment sorption. Additionally, the biodegradation of SMX was faster in anoxic conditions initially, but reversed over time with a longer apparent half-life, indicating the importance of understanding degradation mechanisms in different environments.
