Design of Photothermal Covalent Organic Frameworks by Radical Immobilization

Xiaohui Tang et al.

Summary: Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have unique advantages as photothermal materials due to their structural diversity, face-to-face stacking, and open channels. However, their application in solar-driven water evaporation is limited by complicated framework design, tedious synthesis, and low solar-to-vapor efficiency. In this study, a materials design strategy was proposed to produce efficient and robust photothermal COFs by anchoring nonemissive radicals to the pore surface via a [2+2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization reaction. The resulting radical COF exhibited outstanding photothermal properties such as exceptional temperature increment, good photostability, and high solar-to-vapor efficiency.
