Ultrafast Lifetime and Bright Emission from Graphene Quantum Dots Using Plasmonic Nanogap Cavities

Hiroyuki Kishida et al.

Summary: Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are luminescent nanomaterials with desirable properties, but their long radiative lifetimes limit their use. This study achieved fast and bright luminescence by coupling gap plasmon modes to nanoparticle emitters, resulting in a significant reduction in radiative lifetime.

Normalization, orthogonality, and completeness of quasinormal modes of open systems: the case of electromagnetism

Christophe Sauvan et al.

Summary: This Review addresses the scattering of electromagnetic waves by resonant systems and focuses on representing the scattered field as a superposition of the excited quasinormal modes (QNMs). It discusses the fundamental concepts of normalization, orthogonality, and completeness, which are crucial for understanding the excitation strength and basis expansion of QNMs. The paper reviews recent achievements, debates on normalization, and introduces the concept of QNM regularization with complex coordinate transforms.

Morphology dependence of nanoparticle-on-mirror geometries: A quasinormal mode analysis

Kalun Bedingfield et al.

Summary: In this paper, a quasi-normal mode analysis is performed for the rhombicuboctahedron-on-mirror nanoantenna to study the field distributions and energies of each mode. The study shows that the geometry of the cavity significantly affects the near-field distribution and energies of the modes, and the mode degeneracies can be broken, impacting the radiative emission and far-field profile of each mode. The understanding of how realistic nanoantenna geometries behave in the near-field and far-field is crucial for designing antennas with specific properties in plasmonic systems for controlling and sensing quantum emitters.

Detecting mid-infrared light by molecular frequency upconversion in dual-wavelength nanoantennas

Angelos Xomalis et al.

Summary: Optomechanical interactions enable coherent interconversion of signals between optical and mechanical domains. Extreme light-matter coupling at nanoscale mode volumes allows single mid-infrared (MIR) photon sensitivity. This study demonstrates frequency upconversion by utilizing infrared absorption and Raman activity of molecular vibrations in plasmonic nanocavities, showing potential for low-cost and large-scale infrared detectors and spectroscopic techniques.

Efficient CO2 electroreduction on facet-selective copper films with high conversion rate

Gong Zhang et al.

Summary: The authors developed a novel synthetic approach to prepare Cu(100)-rich thin film electrodes for CO2 electroreduction, achieving high Faradaic efficiency for ethylene and C2+ products. Scaling up the electrode led to increased total current and higher yield of desired C2+ products. Insights into Cu facets exposure effects on intermediates were provided through in situ spectroscopic methods and theoretical calculations, enabling precise design of CO2 reduction reactions for future industrial applications.

Nanoscale Light Confinement: the Q's and V's

Tong Wu et al.

Summary: Microcavities and nanoresonators can greatly enhance light-matter interactions through resonant excitation, with the non-Hermitian leaky modes having a spatially dependent phase factor that distinguishes them from Hermitian bound modes. Recently, the development of non-Hermitian formalism and freeware packages has enabled better analysis of experiments exploring the limits of light-matter interactions at the nanoscale.
