Spatial Distribution of Heavy Metal Contamination in Road Dust Samples from an Urban Environment in Samsun, Turkiye

Seyma Nur Istanbullu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the spatial distribution pattern and degree of trace metals in road dust samples collected from different areas in Samsun city center. The trace metals of Mn, Co, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn are the most examined contaminants in road dust due to their association with high traffic density. The potential contamination index values for Co, Cr, and Ni were relatively low, while Cu, Pb, and Zn showed relatively high values in the main road site, indicating moderate contamination. The pollution assessment methods revealed that Samsun city has been affected by anthropogenic emission of heavy metals at an uncontaminated to moderately contaminated level.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the concentration of BTEX compounds in indoor air of residential-commercial complexes and compare it with other residential buildings. The results showed that the BTEX concentration in upper residential units was higher than in control units, although not significantly. The lifetime cancer risk for benzene in upper residential units indicated carcinogenicity risk. However, the mean hazard quotient for all compounds was lower than 1, suggesting no concern about non-carcinogenicity risk. Nevertheless, it is still necessary to take measures to reduce the sources and concentration of benzene in indoor air.

Degradation of gaseous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by a novel UV-ozone technology

G. Oliva et al.

Summary: In this study, a UV-assisted ozonation (UV/O-3) process with a final scrubbing phase was implemented to evaluate the removal efficiency of toluene and prevent the release of polluting intermediates. The results showed that higher inlet concentration of toluene resulted in lower abatement, while increasing ozone concentration improved degradation efficiencies. The additional water scrubbing step enhanced the removal rate, and the UV/O-3 + Scrubbing process achieved a maximum Elimination Capacity (ECmax) of 22.6 g m(-3) h(-1). The combined system exhibited higher performance and stability compared to the stand-alone UV/O3 process, while also being more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable.

Summary: This study investigates the competitive adsorption of mixed volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on biochar, showing that competition for sorption sites leads to a decrease in individual species' sorption capacity while maintaining the overall sorption capacity. Chemical interactions through hydrogen bonds, electrostatic attraction, and pore-filling are found to be the main mechanisms of VOC adsorption on biochar. Additionally, biochar regeneration efficiency is between 88% and 96%, indicating potential formation of permanent bonds during the sorption process.
