Huan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the transcription factor IbBBX24 regulates the expression of peroxidase gene IbPRX17, enhancing sweet potato tolerance to salt and drought stresses. Overexpression lines of IbBBX24 and IbPRX17 showed higher peroxidase activity and lower H2O2 accumulation under abiotic stress conditions. Additionally, the interaction between IbBBX24 and APETALA2 protein IbTOE3 was found to improve the response to abiotic stress in sweet potato and tobacco plants.

Real-time monitoring of Ralstonia solanacearum infection progress in tomato and Arabidopsis using bioluminescence imaging technology

Summary: A bioluminescent R. solanacearum strain was generated by expressing plasmid-based luxCDABE, and its light intensity was linearly related to bacterial concentrations. The light signals of this strain were found to be transported from roots to stems via vasculature in tomato and Arabidopsis. The quantification of light intensity accurately reflected the difference in disease resistance between Arabidopsis wild type and resistant mutants. This bioluminescent strain offers a tool for high-throughput study of R. solanacearum-Arabidopsis interaction in the future.

A truncated CC-NB-ARC gene TaRPP13L1-3D positively regulates powdery mildew resistance in wheat via the RanGAP-WPP complex-mediated nucleocytoplasmic shuttle

Xiangyu Zhang et al.

Summary: In wheat, TaRPP13L1-3D contributes to quantitative and/or basal resistance to powdery mildew by interacting with WPP1 and restricting the development of Bgt conidia. TaRPP13L1-3D is strongly upregulated in response to powdery mildew and stripe rust infections, and its overexpression enhances resistance to powdery mildew, while silencing it disrupts resistance.

Rui Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, the regulatory network between the upstream eTMs and downstream target gene of miRNA171 in Lilium pumilum was explored, and the mechanism of this regulatory network in somatic embryogenesis (SE) was identified. The results showed that silencing lpu-miR171 and overexpressing LpSCL6 promoted starch accumulation and the expression of key cell cycle genes in calli, thereby accelerating the formation and development of somatic embryos in Lilium.

The lncRNA39896-miR166b-HDZs module affects tomato resistance to Phytophthora infestans

Yuhui Hong et al.

Summary: In tomato resistance to Phytophthora infestans, the long non-coding RNA Sl-lncRNA39896 acts as an endogenous target mimic for the microRNA Sl-miR166b. Silencing the target genes SlHDZ34/45 reduces pathogen accumulation in infected plants, and enhanced resistance is associated with increased levels of jasmonic acid and ethylene.

Cell wall modification by the xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolase XTH19 influences freezing tolerance after cold and sub-zero acclimation

Summary: This study characterized the cell walls of Arabidopsis thaliana using a combination of immunohistochemical, chemical, and spectroscopic analyses, and identified a mutant in the XTH19 gene with reduced freezing tolerance after cold and sub-zero acclimation. Differences in cell wall composition and structure were associated with the reduced freezing tolerance in the mutant compared to the wild type, shedding new light on the potential roles of cell wall remodelling for the increased freezing tolerance observed after low temperature acclimation.

Identification of microRNA transcriptome in apple response to Alternaria alternata infection and evidence that miR390 is negative regulator of defense response

Lihuan Qin et al.

Summary: miRNAs play a significant regulatory role in plant responses to pathogens, with some miRNAs in apple leaves targeting genes involved in disease resistance. Specifically, the study found that certain miRNAs and their target genes exhibit differential expressions in different apple cultivars, shedding light on their roles in regulating resistance mechanisms. Additionally, a fungus-induced plant-genome-encoded miRNA was found to increase susceptibility to fungal infection via a post-transcriptional R-gene-knockdown mechanism.

The ZAR1 resistosome is a calcium-permeable channel triggering plant immune signaling

Guozhi Bi et al.

Summary: The study showed that the activated ZAR1 protein can form pentameric complexes in the plasma membrane, exhibiting ion channel activity dependent on the conserved acidic residue Glu11. Pre-assembled ZAR1 resistosome readily incorporated into planar lipid-bilayers and displayed calcium-permeable cation-selective channel activity. Activation of ZAR1 in the plant cell resulted in Glu11-dependent Ca2+ influx, perturbation of subcellular structures, production of reactive oxygen species, and cell death.

A bacterial effector protein uncovers a plant metabolic pathway involved in tolerance to bacterial wilt disease

Yaru Wang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the plant metabolic pathway mediated by pyruvate decarboxylases (PDCs) contributes to plant tolerance to bacterial wilt disease caused by Ralstonia solanacearum. Plants respond to infection by increasing PDC activity, and deficient PDC activity makes plants more susceptible to bacterial wilt. Treatment with pyruvic acid or acetic acid enhances plant tolerance to the disease, while an effector protein secreted by the pathogen inhibits PDCs' oligomerization and enzymatic activity, promoting disease and completion of the pathogenic life cycle.

Long noncoding RNA lncRNA354 functions as a competing endogenous RNA of miR160b to regulate ARF genes in response to salt stress in upland cotton

Xiaopei Zhang et al.

Summary: The study identified an endogenous lncRNA, lncRNA354, that acts as a competing endogenous RNA to attenuate miR160b suppression of target genes, including auxin response factors (ARFs), in response to salt stress in cotton. Silencing or overexpressing lncRNA354 affected the expression of miR160b and target ARFs, ultimately modulating auxin signaling and influencing growth and salt tolerance.
