The spread of different resistance genes fractions in nitrification system under chronic exposure to varying alkyl chain length benzalkyl dimethylammonium compounds

Haoran Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the nitrification systems were exposed to different concentrations and chain lengths of BACs to explore their chronic effects on RGs. BACs did not significantly affect ammonia oxidation performance, but increased the abundance of intracellular RGs in sludge. While extracellular RGs in water decreased, intracellular RGs tended to convert to extracellular RGs under BACs exposure. Tightly bound tyrosine side chains were correlated with most waterborne RGs, and we-intI1 might contribute to RGs propagation.

Quaternary ammonium compounds promoted anoxic sludge granulation and altered propagation risk of intracellular and extracellular antibiotic resistance genes

Mingyan Zhao et al.

Summary: Surfactants can affect sludge morphology and disinfectants are connected to antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Therefore, further investigation is needed to understand the impact of long-term exposure to quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) on activated sludge and ARGs. This study examined the effects of different QACs on denitrification and observed an inhibitory effect ranking of DADMAC C12 > BAC C12 > ATMAC C12. DADMAC C12 also promoted the formation of granular sludge and the proliferation of extracellular ARGs.

Understanding the effects of algae growth on algae-bacterial granular sludge formation: From sludge characteristics, extracellular polymeric substances, and microbial community

Zhe Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of algae growth on the formation of algae-bacterial granular sludge were evaluated. The results showed that algae played a key role in improving biomass growth and sludge settleability by providing attachment carriers for microbial aggregation. The algae-bacterial granular sludge formed earlier, had a larger size, and exhibited enhanced removal efficiency of various pollutants. Furthermore, the presence of algae in the sludge facilitated the production of extracellular polymeric substances with altered chemical composition and increased content of certain protein structures.

Synergistic analysis of performance, microbial community, and metabolism in aerobic granular sludge under polyacrylonitrile microplastics stress

Wei Xiong et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of neglected PAN MPs on AGS at different concentrations. The results showed that 1 and 10 mg/L concentrations of PAN MPs had no significant impact on granular stability and nutrient removal, but greatly increased EPS secretion. However, at 100 mg/L, PAN MPs severely damaged the granule structure. Microbial community analysis revealed the dominance of phylum Proteobacteria in resisting PAN MPs. Metabolic analysis also showed significant inhibition of genes related to denitrification pathway and membrane transport under PAN MPs stress. This study provides additional information on microplastics wastewater treatment using AGS.

Triclocarban shifted the microbial communities and promoted the spread of antibiotic resistance genes in nitrifying granular sludge system

Zhiqi Wang et al.

Summary: TCC negatively affects the performance of nitrifying granular sludge system and the spread of ARGs. TCC suppresses the activity of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms and decreases the abundance of Nitrospira. The removal process of TCC and bacterial communities are important factors in promoting the spread of ARGs.

Robustness of the partial nitrification-anammox system exposing to triclosan wastewater: Stress relieved by extracellular polymeric substances and resistance genes

Yifan Zhao et al.

Summary: The PN/A process showed resilience to 0.5 mg/L of TCS, even enhancing total nitrogen removal efficiency. The presence of influent TCS led to an increase in extracellular polymeric substances and enrichment of specific resistance genes in the PN/A system, contributing to its ability to resist the antimicrobial agent. Functional bacteria carrying multiple resistance genes were also identified as crucial for maintaining the PN/A system function in the presence of TCS.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the extracellular and intracellular antibiotic resistance genes in different environments and found that their diversities, relative abundances, and compositions were similar. Most ARGs were located on chromosomes, but the proportion of extracellular ARGs carried by plasmids increased.

Triclosan enriched resistance genes more easily than copper in the presence of environmental tetracycline in aerobic granular sludge system

Dingchang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of Triclosan (TCS) and copper (Cu2+) on the aerobic granular sludge (AGS) system treating wastewater containing environmental tetracycline were investigated. The results showed that both TCS and Cu2+ significantly inhibited the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus in the AGS system. TCS had a higher degree of enrichment of resistance genes (RGs) compared to Cu2+, and Cu2+ induced a wider range of horizontal gene transfer. The Cu system appeared to have stronger repair, immunity, and defense abilities than the TCS system, resulting in lower abundance of RGs. The findings highlight the importance of monitoring and preventing the increase of TCS and Cu2+ levels in wastewater treatment plants to avoid the proliferation and dissemination of various RGs.

Distinct bacterial communities and resistance genes enriched by triclocarban-contaminated polyethylene microplastics in antibiotics and heavy metals polluted sewage environment

Yifan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the formation of biofilms on contaminated microplastics in sewage polluted with antibiotics and/or heavy metals. The results showed that triclocarban (TCC), a common pollutant, did not hinder bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation on polyethylene microplastics (PE MPs). In fact, TCC-contaminated PE MPs were more likely to attract potential pathogenic and resistant bacteria compared to clean PE MPs. The presence of TCC, antibiotics, and copper in the sewage exerted a stronger selective pressure on bacterial communities and promoted the co-selection of resistance genes. Additionally, TCC-contaminated PE MPs increased the abundance of certain mobile genetic elements in sewage, which could facilitate the transmission of resistance genes.
