The effect of selected immunostimulants on hemocytes of the false black widow Steatoda grossa (Theridiidae) spiders under chronic exposition to cadmium

Kamila Wisniewska et al.

Summary: The study found that long-term exposure to low concentrations of cadmium can affect the immune potential of Steatoda grossa spiders, leading to changes in the types and numbers of hemocytes, and causing degenerative changes in cells. In addition, the effects of immunostimulation on cadmium-exposed individuals were altered.

The immunotoxicity of Cd exposure to gypsy moth larvae: An integrated analysis of cellular immunity and humoral immunity

Hongfei Wu et al.

Summary: The innate immunity of gypsy moth larvae under Cd stress was evaluated, and it was found that Cd exposure can decrease both cellular immunity and humoral immunity. Cd stress induces hemocyte apoptosis through the endoplasmic reticulum pathway, leading to the collapse of cellular immunity. The Toll, IMD, and JAK/STAT signaling pathways involved in pathogen recognition, signal transduction, and effector synthesis of humoral immunity are also significantly affected by Cd stress.

Gut microbiota-mediated ferroptosis contributes to mercury exposure-induced brain injury in common carp

Yue Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that mercury exposure could induce brain injury and memory loss in common carp, partly through inducing neuronal ferroptosis and increasing the abundance of Aeromonas, a pathogenic bacterium, in the gut.

Effect of heavy metals pollution on the composition and diversity of the intestinal microbial community of a pygmy grasshopper (Eucriotettix oculatus)

Xiao-Dong Li et al.

Summary: Heavy metal pollution can alter the gut microbial community of insects, increasing pathogenic bacteria which may have negative impacts on the host's health. However, probiotics and beneficial metabolism pathways also increase, aiding the host in resisting the damage caused by heavy metal stress.

The transfer of trace metals in the soil-plant-arthropod system

Mark Tibbett et al.

Summary: Research has shown that trace metals can be toxic, but current studies mainly focus on single organisms rather than multi-trophic transfer in terrestrial food chains. The key factors controlling the transfer of trace metals in the soil-plant-arthropod system are found to be the form and location of the metal, as well as the physiological mechanisms of each organism.

Diversity and Function of Wolf Spider Gut Microbiota Revealed by Shotgun Metagenomics

Runbiao Wu et al.

Summary: This study compared the gut microbiota of two wolf spider species, Pardosa agraria and P. laura, from different ecosystems and found similarities in richness and abundance, but differences in microbial composition and function. The gut microbiota of P. laura were enriched in genes for carbohydrate metabolism, while those of P. agraria showed a higher proportion of genes encoding acetyltransferase, linked to antibiotic resistance. Furthermore, three high-quality microbial genomes were reconstructed, providing insights into the diversity and function of gut microbiota in closely related spiders.

Characterization of cadmium-responsive transcription factors in wolf spider Pardosa pseudoannulata

Juan Wang et al.

Summary: Transcription factors play a crucial role in the molecular response of Pardosa pseudoannulata to cadmium stress, with candidate Cd-responsive TFs potentially linked to growth and antioxidant defense mechanisms. The study also identified hub genes and conserved sequences, shedding light on the adaptation mechanisms of spiders to heavy metal stress.

Intestinal response characteristic and potential microbial dysbiosis in digestive tract of Bufo gargarizans after exposure to cadmium and lead, alone or combined

Rui Zheng et al.

Summary: The study revealed that co-exposure of Cd-Pb had more severe impacts on both Bufo gargarizans tadpoles and their intestinal microbiota, leading to growth retardation, intestinal histological injury, and decreased activities of digestive enzymes. Additionally, exposure to Cd and Pb, especially in mixed form, altered the diversity and richness of microbiota, with Proteobacteria significantly increased in tadpoles under metal exposure. The functional prediction suggested that the disorders of metabolism and immune responses of intestinal microbiota were increased in tadpoles exposed to Cd/Pb, especially the mixture of Cd and Pb.
