Machine learning approaches for screening the risk of obstructive sleep apnea in the Taiwan population based on body profile

Cheng-Yu Tsai et al.

Summary: This study developed new models for screening the risk of moderate-to-severe and severe OSAS in different age groups and sexes using anthropometric features in the Taiwan population. The models showed that BMI was the most influential parameter in both types of OSAS severity screening models.

Associations among sleep-disordered breathing, arousal response, and risk of mild cognitive impairment in a northern Taiwan population

Cheng-Yu Tsai et al.

Summary: This study found that sleep arousal is associated with the risk of mild cognitive impairment, especially during non-rapid eye movement sleep. In addition, respiratory events are also associated with cognitive dysfunction. However, further research is needed to confirm the causality of these relationships.

Screening for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Risk by Using Machine Learning Approaches and Anthropometric Features

Cheng-Yu Tsai et al.

Summary: In this study, machine learning models were developed to screen for the risk of moderate to severe and severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) using easily accessed anthropometric features. The level of visceral fat was identified as a predominant feature in assessing the risk of OSA.

Screening of sleep apnea based on heart rate variability and long short-term memory

Ayako Iwasaki et al.

Summary: Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is a common sleep disorder with high undiagnosed rates. A new screening method combining heart rate measurement and long short-term memory (LSTM) showed superior sensitivity and specificity in distinguishing patients with moderate-to-severe SAS. This method, easily applicable at home using wearable heart rate sensors, may serve as an effective SAS screening system.

DeepSleep convolutional neural network allows accurate and fast detection of sleep arousal

Hongyang Li et al.

Summary: Li and Guan present a deep learning approach for automatically segmenting sleep arousal regions based on polysomnographic recordings. The algorithm, which won an open competition, enables fast and accurate delineation of sleep arousal events and would be useful in the scoring process in clinical studies.

Comparison of Hospital-Based and Home-Based Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Severity Measurements with a Single-Lead Electrocardiogram Patch

Wen-Te Liu et al.

Summary: Obstructive sleep apnoea is a major global health concern, with discrepancies between home-based and hospital-based PSG measurements. The percentage of supine sleep time in home assessments correlates with OSA indices. High supine sleep time may lead to an overestimation of OSA indices in hospital examinations.

Reliability of heart-rate-variability features derived from ultra-short ECG recordings and their validity in the assessment of cardiac autonomic neuropathy

D. Wehler et al.

Summary: This study aimed to provide methodologically strong evidence for the reliability of HRV analysis of ultra-short ECGs compared to the benchmark of 300 s. Results showed that RMSSD and HF were reliable and retained significant differences between control and dCAN from ECGs down to 10 s, while LF could be considered reliable in recordings of at least 30 s. The study also indicated that ultra-short HRV analysis has the potential to become a time-efficient and accurate diagnostic tool for dCAN in clinical practice.
