Phytochemical and anti-MRSA constituents of Zanthoxylum nitidum

Qi Zeng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bioactive compounds isolated from the roots of Zanthoxylum nitidum and found that two compounds showed antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). These compounds exhibited synergistic action with ampicillin, reducing the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) significantly, and had the ability to destroy bacterial biofilm when combined with ampicillin. In vitro, the combination treatment showed a strong scavenging effect on planktonic bacteria, and in vivo, it effectively cleared skin infection in a wound infection model. The investigation supported the traditional use of Z. nitidum in treating bacterial infections and may provide new natural products for the treatment of drug-resistant bacteria.

Discovery, enantioselective synthesis of myrtucommulone E analogues as tyrosyl-DNA phosphodiesterase 2 inhibitors and their biological activities

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: Tyrosyl-DNA phosphodiesterase 2 (TDP2) is a recently discovered DNA repair enzyme that can specifically repair topoisomerase 2 (TOP2)-mediated DNA damage. In this study, the natural product myrtucommulone E was identified as a selective TDP2 inhibitor and its synthesis was achieved through a key chemical reaction. Analogue (+)-29 showed good TDP2 inhibition potency and enhanced the cytotoxicity of TOP2 inhibitor.

Phloroglucinols with hAChE and ?-glucosidase inhibitory activities from the leaves of tropic Rhodomyrtus tomentosa

Mu-Yuan Yu et al.

Summary: This study discovered five undescribed phloroglucinol compounds from the leaves of Rhodomyrtus tomentosa, including four phloroglucinol meroterpenoids and one phloroglucinol dimer. The structures of these compounds were determined using various analytical techniques. Notably, two of the compounds exhibited a unique structure. Furthermore, one of the compounds showed potential inhibition against human acetylcholinesterase and alpha-glucosidase, making it a potential candidate for the development of anti-Alzheimer and antidiabetic drugs.

Phloroglucinol derivatives rhotomensones A-G from Rhodomyrtus tomentosa

Qing-Hu Mo et al.

Summary: New phloroglucinol derivatives, rhotomensones A-G, and a known derivative rhodomyrtosone B were isolated from the leaves of Rhodomyrtus tomentosa. Rhotomensones A-D and G have unique structural characteristics, while rhotomensone A substitutes a benzene ring, rhotomensones B-D are bonded with a 2-methylbutanoyl group, and rhotomensone G has two fewer carbons. Rhotomensones E and F exhibited inhibitory activities against alpha-glucosidase, while rhodomyrtosone B showed significant antibacterial activity against certain bacteria.
