Towards an Improved Large-Scale Gridded Population Dataset: A Pan-European Study on the Integration of 3D Settlement Data into Population Modelling

Daniela Palacios-Lopez et al.

Summary: Large-scale gridded population datasets are important sources of information for sustainable development, but existing products still suffer from low accuracy, particularly in areas with high-rise buildings or industrial/commercial areas. This research explores the potential of the new WSF3D dataset in large-scale population modeling, and finds that incorporating volume and settlement use information significantly improves population estimates.

HMSM-Net: Hierarchical multi-scale matching network for disparity estimation of high-resolution satellite stereo images

Sheng He et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a hierarchical multi-scale matching network (HMSM-Net) for the disparity estimation of high-resolution satellite stereo images. The network leverages multi-scale features and a hierarchical coarse-to-fine matching strategy to handle challenging regions and achieves superior accuracy compared to state-of-the-art methods. The authors also create a dense stereo matching dataset and provide the source codes and evaluation dataset for further research.

World Settlement Footprint 3D-A first three-dimensional survey of the global building stock

Thomas Esch et al.

Summary: Settlements, particularly cities, face key challenges related to global change and sustainable development. However, there is currently no consistent and detailed survey of the distribution and concentration of the building stock worldwide. To address this data gap, an approach was developed to map key characteristics of the world's building stock in unprecedented spatial detail for every settlement. The resulting World Settlement Footprint 3D dataset provides valuable and globally consistent information on the built environment, enabling a wide range of environmental, socioeconomic, and climatological studies.

Satellite mapping of urban built-up heights reveals extreme infrastructure gaps and inequalities in the Global South

Yuyu Zhou et al.

Summary: Information on urban built-up infrastructure is crucial for understanding the impact of cities on the environment, economy, and society. However, the lack of data on built-up heights has limited our knowledge of urban infrastructure globally. This study developed a global atlas of urban built-up heights and found significant disparities in per capita infrastructure between the Global North and Global South, highlighting the substantial infrastructure demand in the Global South.

A deep learning method for building height estimation using high-resolution multi-view imagery over urban areas: A case study of 42 Chinese cities

Yinxia Cao et al.

Summary: The study focuses on using high-resolution multi-view satellite images for building height estimation, proposing the M(3)Net deep network model that can accurately estimate building height at a spatial resolution of 2.5 meters. Testing on 42 Chinese cities showed that M(3)Net outperformed the RF method with a lower root mean square error (RMSE), and the inclusion of ZY-3 multi-view images significantly reduced the uncertainty of building height prediction.
