Extreme phonon anharmonicity underpins superionic diffusion and ultralow thermal conductivity in argyrodite Ag8SnSe6

Qingyong Ren et al.

Summary: Superionic materials have ultralow thermal conductivity and fast ionic diffusion, making them excellent for thermoelectric converters and solid-state electrolytes. However, the correlation between these two features is unclear due to limited understanding of their atomic dynamics. In this study, we investigate ionic diffusion and lattice dynamics in Ag8SnSe6 and identify the interplay between vibrational dynamics and the host framework that enables superionicity. We also find that extreme phonon anharmonicity and weak bonding contribute to the ultralow thermal conductivity. These insights provide a fundamental understanding of atomic dynamics in superionic materials for energy conversion and storage.

Strongly Anharmonic Phonons and Their Role in Superionic Diffusion and Ultralow Thermal Conductivity of Cu7PSe6

Mayanak K. Gupta et al.

Summary: This study provides critical insights into the atomistic mechanisms underlying fast ion conduction in the superionic material Cu7PSe6, through inelastic and quasielastic neutron scattering measurements and molecular dynamics simulations. The results reveal that the diffusion of copper ions is limited by intercluster hopping controlled by selective anharmonic phonons. The thermal conductivity is dominated by low-energy acoustic phonon modes of the crystal framework. These findings highlight the importance of strongly anharmonic effects in superionic systems.

Modification of NASICON Electrolyte and Its Application in Real Na-Ion Cells

Qiangqiang Zhang et al.

Summary: The low ionic conductivity and inferior interfacial reliability between solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) and solid-state electrodes are two challenges for the application of solid-state sodium batteries (SSSBs). In this study, sodium super ionic conductor (NASICON)-type SSEs were synthesized, and Na3.3Zr1.85Mg0.15Si2PO12 showed the highest ionic conductivity. However, the NASICON SSEs were not stable enough under high voltage, and the interface between the electrolyte and high-voltage cathodes needs further investigation. Coating NASICON on the separator improved the cycling performance of SSSBs.

Controlling Defects to Achieve Reproducibly High Ionic Conductivity in Na3SbS4 Solid Electrolytes

Masaki Shimoda et al.

Summary: This study discusses the thermodynamic origin of sample-dependent variations in highly conductive solid electrolytes (SEs) using Na3SbS4 as a model SE. The impact of uncontrolled variations in elemental chemical potentials on ionic conductivity is investigated with theory and experiments. It is shown that by controlling the chemical potentials through phase boundary mapping, the sample-dependent variation is reduced and reproducibly high ionic conductivity is achieved.

Summary: This study examines the factors influencing the global clean renewable energy transition (RET) and provides a wider perspective through seven broad lenses. Developed countries lead in RET research and collaboration between rich and poor countries is necessary. Local technology promotion and demand-pull and technology-push policies are crucial for successful RET. While there is unanimous optimism regarding the future prospects of renewable energy in the electricity sector, skepticism remains for other high energy demanding areas.

The origin of high Na+ ion conductivity in Na1+xZr2SixP3-xO12 NASICON materials

Judith Schuett et al.

Summary: Due to their high sodium ion conductivity, sodium super ionic conductors (NASICONs) have gained significant attention as solid electrolytes in solid state batteries. Previous research using density functional theory has shown excellent sodium ion conductivity for Na1+xZr2SixP3-xO12 with x = 2-2.5. This study investigates the influence of the cation environment on the site energies of sodium ions and their correlated migration, revealing that electrostatic effects and increased coulombic repulsion play important roles in determining the conductivity. An energy model based on these findings is developed to predict configurational and migration energy in subsequent simulations.

Alkali-Rich Antiperovskite M3FCh (M = Li, Na; Ch = S, Se, Te): The Role of Anions in Phase Stability and Ionic Transport

Susumu Fujii et al.

Summary: The role of anions in antiperovskites was investigated through theoretical and experimental studies, revealing that replacing polarizable H- anions with ionic F- anions in the M(3)FCh family does not slow down ion diffusion. It was found that the low-frequency rotational modes of the octahedron in cubic M(3)FCh facilitate fast ionic diffusion, showing a correlation between tolerance factor and ionic transport. The cubic iodine-doped Li3FSe exhibited a room-temperature ionic conductivity of 5 x 10(-5) S/cm with a bulk activation energy of 0.18 eV.
