Persistence and remote sensing of agri-food wastes in the environment: Current state and perspectives

Retinder Kour et al.

Summary: Food demand is projected to increase globally by 60-110% from 2005 to 2050 due to changes in diet and population growth. This will result in the generation of significant amounts of agri-food wastes (AFWs), which can be divided into pre-consumption and post-consumption wastes. AFWs lead to economic losses for all stakeholders involved in the food supply chain. Inadequate transportation, packaging, storage, processing, contamination, handling, and expiry dates are identified as the main reasons for AFW generation, along with cultural, societal, personal, and behavioral factors. Proper management and valorization of AFWs can have a significant impact on the economy and the environment.
