Analytical solutions of reaction-diffusion phenomena by porous cylindrical pellets with finite length

Young-Sang Cho

Summary: Analytical solutions were derived to predict the transient change of intra-particle concentration in cylindrical pellets immersed in a large medium. The effects of Thiele modulus and aspect ratio of the pellet on the average intra-particle concentration were studied. A method was proposed to measure intra-particle diffusivity for a batch adsorber. The effect of aspect ratio could be investigated in various reactors by including the effectiveness factor in material balance equations.

Modelling of catalytic reactors containing core-shell pellets with various morphologies for series reactions

Young-Sang Cho

Summary: Modelling of series reactions for core-shell catalysts was conducted, deriving mathematical solutions of concentration profiles inside the particles from reaction-diffusion equations with consideration of inert-core thickness (xi(c)) for first-order kinetics. Transient behaviors of catalytic reactors containing core-shell pellets were predicted based on the pseudo-steady state approximation. The removal rate of reactants in a batch reactor increased with Thiele modulus and decreased xi(c) in the order of sphere > cylinder > slab. The transient concentration of intermediate product was greatly influenced by the distribution coefficient, diffusivity ratio, particle shape, and xi(c). Concentration in a continuously stirred tank reactor was affected by feed rate and catalyst loading, and conversion could be enhanced by cascade connection. In a fixed-bed reactor, the concentration increased with increasing xi(c) due to insufficient catalyst volume, and the Peclet number and particle shape also played important roles in concentration distribution, indicating their significance as design parameters.

Fabrication of hollow titania fibers by electro-spinning for photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes

Thi Thu Hien Nguyen et al.

Summary: Nanostructured titania fibers, including nonporous, macroporous, hollow, and hollow macroporous fibers, were successfully prepared using electrospinning with TDIP as the starting material. Hollow microstructure inside the fibrous materials was achieved by injecting oil and titania precursor into a dual concentric nozzle. Hollow and macroporous hollow titania fibers were obtained by removing oil and PS nanospheres as sacrificial templates, respectively. The photocatalytic activity of the titania fibers was compared, and the hollow titania fibers showed the highest rate constant for the degradation of methylene blue under UV light illumination.

Hollow-Form LaNiO3 Perovskite Catalyst for PM Combustion Using Carbon Fibers as a Template

Kazumasa Oshima et al.

Summary: The effective utilization of carbon fibers recovered from thermal decomposition recycling of CFRP was investigated in this study. Hollow-form LaNiO3 perovskite-type oxide, which acted as a combustion catalyst for particulate matter (PM), was synthesized using carbon fibers as templates. The carbon template provided internal heat supply, lowering the calcination temperature. The hollow morphology of LaNiO3 resulted in decreased bulk density and enhanced contact with PM, leading to high PM combustion efficiency.

Egg-Shell-Type MgAl2O4 Pellet Catalyst for Steam Methane Reforming Reaction Activity: Effect of Pellet Preparation Temperature

Yeon Jeong Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, an egg-shell type catalyst was prepared for large-scale steam methane reformer. Different characteristics of pellet supports were prepared by using different calcination temperatures, and Ni-supported catalysts were prepared on these supports. The results showed that the Ni/sup-1473 catalyst, which experienced the highest calcination temperature, exhibited the best catalytic activity and coke resistance.
