The farther, the closer: geographic proximity and niche overlap versus genetic divergence in Caucasian rock lizards

David Tarkhnishvili et al.

Summary: Caucasian rock lizards were studied to determine if their distribution depends on the distribution of congeneric taxa. It was found that there is a significant correlation between divergence time and the extent of contact, as well as overlap of suitable habitats, in sympatric and parapatric species. The closest species have limited contact while species separated later have overlapping ranges, though separated by altitude. The most distant species are commonly found in the same location, suggesting the presence of compensatory mechanisms to reduce interspecific contacts.

Genetic diversity and the origins of parthenogenesis in the teiid lizard Aspidoscelis laredoensis

Anthony J. Barley et al.

Summary: Unisexual vertebrates typically form through hybridization events between sexual species, which can have important ecological consequences. Studying the genetic diversity in unisexual lineages has proven challenging, especially in understanding the contribution of historical hybridization events versus post formational mutation. This study on a diploid unisexual lizard species in Texas and Mexico highlights the genetic variation and historical patterns of hybridization, providing insights into the mechanisms that generate and maintain lineage diversity in unisexual species.

Precise paternal ancestry of hybrid unisexual ZW lizards (genus Darevskia: Lacertidae: Squamata) revealed by Z-linked genomic markers

Alexey Yanchukov et al.

Summary: In this study, we genotyped multiple populations of seven parthenogenetic species of rock lizards and their putative sexual parental populations using genomic markers. By aligning the sequence reads to a reference Z chromosome of a related lizard species, we gained insights into the origin of all-female hybrid populations. The estimated splits between the paternal sexual ancestors and their daughter species occurred earlier than previously suggested.

Parthenogenesis in Darevskia lizards: A rare outcome of common hybridization, not a common outcome of rare hybridization

Susana Freitas et al.

Summary: This study used capture sequencing to estimate phylogenetic relationships and gene flow among Darevskia species, and found evidence for widespread hybridization and gene flow. The results suggest that the generation of parthenogenetic hybrids in Darevskia is a rare outcome of hybridization events within the genus, but a typical outcome when specific species pairs hybridize.

Revising the taxonomy of Darevskia valentini (Boettger, 1892) and Darevskia rudis (Bedriaga, 1886) (Squamata, Lacertidae): a Morpho-Phylogenetic integrated study in a complex Anatolian scenario

Oscar Arribas et al.

Summary: Revealing biodiversity allows for the accurate determination of the underlying causes of biological processes such as speciation and hybridization. In this study, highly detailed morphological and molecular evaluations were performed on populations of the genus Darevskia in Anatolia and Caucasus, two prominent zoogeographic areas. The comprehensive taxonomic revision of this complex resulted in new species level designations and proposed new taxa, providing a more accurate understanding of the past histories of species in the genus Darevskia.

First Genome of Rock Lizard Darevskia valentini Involved in Formation of Several Parthenogenetic Species

Sofia Ochkalova et al.

Summary: This study presents the first genome assembly of the rock lizard Darevskia valentini, revealing the invasion of transposons in its Hox clusters and the presence of the HoxC1 gene that was considered lost in amniote ancestor. These findings are significant for understanding the mechanisms of parthenogenesis and supporting comparative studies among reptiles.

Ivica Letunic et al.

Summary: The Interactive Tree Of Life is an online tool for displaying, manipulating, and annotating phylogenetic and other trees. The latest version 5 introduces a new tree display engine and several new features, such as a new dataset type and expanded annotation options. Users can now also manually annotate trees by hand, providing more flexibility and control.

Cryptic genetic structure within Valentin's Lizard, Darevskia valentini (Boettger, 1892) (Squamata, Lacertidae), with implications for systematics and origins of parthenogenesis

Kamil Candan et al.

Summary: The study revealed previously unrecognized genetically highly divergent lineages within the Darevskia valentini species, advancing the understanding of the ancestry of parthenogenesis in some species resulting from past hybridization events. The phylogenetic analyses did not align with the currently accepted taxonomy, prompting discussions on possible taxonomic resolutions.
