Pyrene-Based Fluorescent Probe for Off-on-Off Sequential Detection of Cu2+ and CN- with HeLa Cells Imaging

Muthaiah Shellaiah et al.

Summary: A novel pyrene-appended Schiff base probe L with aggregation-induced emissions (AIE) was synthesized and employed for sequentially detecting Cu2+ and CN-. Probe L induced excimer formation in the presence of Cu2+ and this process was reversed by adding CN-. The stoichiometry, binding atoms, and complex reversibility of the excimer complex L-Cu2+-L* were confirmed through various analyses, and the association constant of L to Cu2+ was determined. The practicality of Cu2+ and CN- detection was demonstrated using a TLC plate and a blended polymer membrane, and the low toxicity of probe L allowed for its application in detecting Cu2+ and CN- inside HeLa cells.

A reversible CHEF-based NIR fluorescent probe for sensing Hg2+and its multiple application in environmental media and biological systems

Meiqing Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, a reversible CHEF-based near-infrared fluorescent probe DHEY capable of specifically recognizing Hg2+ was constructed. DHEY showed advantages of large Stokes shift, excellent selectivity, high sensitivity, and fast response efficiency. Interestingly, DHEY can also realize rapid and effective detection of Hg2+ after being recycled multiple times. The successful recovery of trace Hg2+ in different environmental water samples fully demonstrates the potential of DHEY for actual applications. In addition, DHEY enables real-time observation of the distribution and translocation pattern of exogenous Hg2+ in HeLa cells and zebrafish, providing important theoretical support for investigating the fate of heavy metal ions in the environment using fluorescence techniques.

Artificial Action Potential and Ionic Power Device Inspired by Ion Channels and Excitable Cell

Jung-Soo Kim et al.

Summary: The cell-inspired ionic power device successfully utilizes the Donnan effect to generate high ionic currents and reduce the osmotic imbalance of the membrane. By implementing a mechanical switching system similar to mechanosensitive ion channels, it presents artificial neuronal signaling. Compared to reverse electrodialysis, this device achieves ten times the current and 8.5 times the power density, demonstrating the potential of an ion-based artificial nervous system.

Two types of rhodamine-naphthalimide-based fluorescence sensors for different ratiometric detection of Hg(II) or Fe(III)

Yi Li et al.

Summary: Two types of rhodamine-naphthalimide sensors were designed and synthesized for ratiometric detection of Fe(III) or Hg(II). The sensors showed different recognition properties and detection limits for the target metal ions. The structure-fluorescence properties relationships were discussed using quantum chemical calculations. Adjusting the linker and introducing other recognition groups could lead to novel sensors with selective recognition of different metal ions.

X-ray structurally characterized quinoline based fluorescent probes for pH sensing: Application in intracellular pH imaging; DFT calculations and fluorescent labelling

Subhajit Guria et al.

Summary: Fluorescent probes QNOH-MO and QNOH-OME based on quinoline were synthesized and characterized, showing pH-dependent colorimetric and fluorescence responses. These probes were able to distinguish pH changes in live cells and were also used for fluorescent labelling of cholesterol, demonstrating potential for drug delivery applications. Furthermore, quaternization of QNOH-MO improved its water solubility and pH sensing efficiency, making it a promising cationic probe.
