Valorization of waste biomass through hydrothermal liquefaction: A review with focus on linking hydrothermal factors to products characteristics

Qingwen Fan et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is an important technique for converting biomass into value-added products, and the quality of the products is closely related to the reaction conditions and properties of the raw materials. This review examines the relationship between hydrothermal factors (temperature, retention time, and pressure) and product characteristics in order to improve the quality of HTL products. It also summarizes the different pretreatment techniques (acid, alkali, enzyme, ozone, ultrasonic, and microwave) coupled with HTL, and their mechanisms for breaking down long-chain polymers such as lignin, cellulose, protein, and lipid. The contribution of components to the calorific value and yield of the products is emphasized, as well as the synergistic and antagonistic effects of model compounds.

Valorization of waste biomass through hydrothermal liquefaction: A review with focus on linking hydrothermal factors to products characteristics

Qingwen Fan et al.

Summary: By studying the reaction conditions and properties of raw materials, the quality of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) products can be systematically improved. This article summarizes the various pretreatment techniques coupled with HTL, as well as their mechanisms for breaking down long-chain polymers such as lignin, cellulose, protein, and lipid. The contribution of components to calorific value and yield of products, as well as the synergistic and antagonistic effects of model compounds, are emphasized. Therefore, biomass pretreatment holds promise but also presents challenges in reducing N-/O-heteroatoms.

Olive oil industry: a review of waste stream composition, environmental impacts, and energy valorization paths

Akram Dahdouh et al.

Summary: Olive oil production is economically important in the Mediterranean region, but it generates significant amounts of environmentally harmful waste. Efficient management and utilization of these wastes for energy purposes have gained attention in the scientific community. This review article summarizes the oil extraction techniques, waste characterization, and research developments related to the conversion of olive mill wastes into energy products. The lack of studies on hydrothermal processing of these wastes is identified as an interesting research direction.

Lignocellulosic and algal biomass for bio-crude production using hydrothermal liquefaction: Conversion techniques, mechanism and process conditions: A review

Chitra Devi Venkatachalam et al.

Summary: Thermochemical conversion is an effective process for producing biocrude, and Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL) is a promising technique. Algae, as a third-generation feedstock, plays a crucial role in bio-oil production. The subcritical water in HTL facilitates the production of various chemicals from biomass, as well as the synthesis of bio-gas and bio-char. This review provides an overview of different conversion routes and examines the effects of operating parameters on biocrude yield.

Co-hydrothermal carbonization of cellulose, hemicellulose, and protein with aqueous phase recirculation: Insight into the reaction mechanisms on hydrochar formation

Tonggui Liu et al.

Summary: Co-hydrothermal carbonization (Co-HTC) coupled with aqueous phase (AP) recirculation has been found to improve hydrochar production by promoting hydrochar formation and reducing oxygen content. The combination of Co-HTC and AP recirculation exhibited enhanced effects. The composition of hydrochar was mainly derived from oxygenated compounds in cellulose and hemicellulose, as well as nitrogen-containing compounds in protein. The major mechanisms for enhanced hydrochar formation during Co-HTC with AP recirculation were the Maillard reaction, catalytical effects from acids in the recycling AP, and the repolymerization or condensation of accumulated compounds in AP.

Thermochemical liquefaction of Brassica napus straw: Effect of liquefaction parameters on biocrude

Zhihua Xiao et al.

Summary: This study utilized thermochemical liquefaction to convert rape straw into high-quality biocrude (ORS), and investigated the effects of liquefaction temperature, solid-liquid ratio (R-1), and solvent filling ratio (R-2) on the yield of ORS. The maximum yield (22.11%) was achieved at 340 degrees C, with R-1 at 10% and R-2 at 20%. GC-MS analysis revealed that at lower temperatures, ORS mainly contained esters, while at higher temperatures, it consisted mainly of phenolic compounds. Furthermore, the process demonstrated not only effective disposal of rape straw, but also the conversion into a potential renewable transportation energy alternative.

Summary: The production of fuels and targeted chemicals from biomass is a current challenge, where pyrolysis generates complex bio-oils that require further upgrading for effective use in engines. Van Krevelen diagrams can be used to understand the compositional changes and possible reaction routes that favor molecules with increased energy density. Proposed reaction vectors in these diagrams can help inform future production strategies, aiming to increase the energy density of bio-oils while reducing undesirable char formation.
