Rust conversion of archeological cannonball from Fort Cornwallis using oil palm frond lignin

Liyana Syafawati Osman et al.

Summary: This study introduces oil palm fronds (OPF) lignin as a new green substitute for rust converters due to its antioxidant properties. The evaluation of soda and organosolv lignin samples using FTIR, C-13 NMR, and TGA suggests that soda lignin has higher antioxidant properties. Analysis of a rust sample from an archeological cannonball using FTIR, XRD, and SEM/EDX identifies lepidocrocite as the main component. FTIR study on the performance of OPF in rust treatment shows that 7 wt% soda lignin has the best rust converter effect with a 92.73% inhibition rate.

A Comparison of Alkaline and Organosolv Lignin Extraction Methods from Coconut Husks as an Alternative Material for Green Applications

Nur Hanis Abd Latif et al.

Summary: The effects of alkaline and organosolv pulping on the structural properties of lignin from coconut husk biomass were evaluated. Different functional groups within the lignin samples were characterized and compared using various analyses. It was found that alkaline pulping produced lignin with higher molecular weight and greater solubility.

A tough, biodegradable and water-resistant plastic alternative from coconut husk

Yihao Leow et al.

Summary: This study develops a high-performance bioplastic from coconut husk, addressing the issues of poor mechanical performance and water stability in lignocellulosic bioplastics. By optimizing the processing conditions, the generated bioplastics exhibit strong mechanical properties and excellent water stability, making them a potential solution to replace petroleum-based plastics.

Microstructure and phase composition of bronze Montefortino helmets discovered Mediterranean seabed to explain an unusual corrosion

Francesco Armetta et al.

Summary: Two Monterfortino helmets recovered from the Mediterranean seabed exhibit unusual features compared to more common helmets of the same period found in underwater environments. Through a multi-analytical approach, the compounds constituting the helmets were identified and considerations were made about their metallurgy despite degradation of all metal. The differences in composition between the two helmets were attributed to the altered position of one helmet in the seabed over centuries. This microstructural investigation marks the first time the aging processes involved in the total oxidation of Roman bronze helmet metal have been reconstructed.

Acetone:Water fractionation of pyrolytic lignin improves its antioxidant and antibacterial activity

Mailson Matos et al.

Summary: Pyrolytic lignin, the water-insoluble fraction of bio-oil from rapid pyrolysis, was separated to improve extraction of monophenols. Phenolic compounds derived from lignin were found to be effective antioxidants and antimicrobials. Aqueous acetone solutions were used to fractionate eucalypt pyrolytic lignin, resulting in fractions with higher concentrations of phenolic, carboxylic, and lower molecular weight compounds. The antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were mainly attributed to phenolic compounds with methoxy substituents.

Study on Clitoria ternatea extracts doped sol-gel coatings for the corrosion mitigation of mild steel

Noorliza Azwani Muhamad Ghuzali et al.

Summary: This study focuses on incorporating Clitoria ternatea extracts into sol-gel coatings for mild steel corrosion mitigation. The ethanol extract showed higher antioxidant properties compared to the water extract. Coatings doped with 75 ppm ethanol extract exhibited the highest inhibition efficiency of 89.6%, leading to improved surface morphology of mild steel substrates.
