Particle films improve photosynthesis of citrus trees under excess irradiance by reducing leaf temperature

Lucas G. P. Bernardi et al.

Summary: High irradiance and increased air temperature can affect tree crops and impact fruit yield and quality. The use of particle coating films can mitigate the harmful effects of excess UV irradiance and temperature in sweet orange trees by improving CO2 assimilation, photosynthetic efficiency, and reducing leaf temperatures. This study suggests that suspension particles can be an effective way to protect tree crops from the impacts of climate change.

Enhancing proline turnover is the key physiological response of mature citrus leaves to fruiting

Huaye Xiong et al.

Summary: Mature citrus leaves play a central role in carbon and nitrogen metabolism for citrus tree growth. Fruit production and nitrogen supply have significant effects on leaf metabolism, as evidenced by leaf chlorosis on fruiting branches. In this study, citrus trees were grown with low and high nitrogen supplies, and analysis of leaves and phloem sap from fruiting and nonfruiting branches revealed that fruiting stimulates nitrogen allocation and organic nitrogen catabolism. Proline was identified as a key metabolite in mature citrus leaves and phloem sap, with decreased levels due to fruiting. Additionally, nitrogen supply enhanced nitrogen storage and proline turnover in both fruiting and nonfruiting branches. The timing of nitrogen management in orchards is important for optimal fruit development.

The impacts of climate, competition, and their interactions on crown width for three major species in Chinese boreal forests

Junjie Wang et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impacts of climate, competition, and their interactions on crown width (CW) in Chinese boreal natural secondary forests. The results revealed that the effects of competition and climate on CW varied depending on tree species and size. Climatic factors such as extreme temperature, wind speed, and solar radiation were found to affect CW, with broadleaf species showing greater sensitivity to climate compared to conifers. The study also identified significant interactions between climate and intraspecific competition, which could mitigate the negative effects on CW.

Will citrus geographical indications face different climate change challenges in China?

Yuyang Xian et al.

Summary: Global climate change resulting from human activities has both opportunities and challenges for agricultural production. This study used the MaxEnt model to simulate the habitat suitability for citrus geographical indications based on nine environmental factors. The results showed that the suitable area for citrus GIs moved north in future scenarios and was severely affected by precipitation and temperature. The effects of climate change on the habitats of different citrus types varied.

Linking growth models and allometric equations to estimate carbon sequestration potential of cocoa agroforestry systems in West Africa

Antonio Jesus Ariza Salamanca et al.

Summary: Establishment of a tree canopy in Cocoa Agroforestry Systems (C-AFS) provides higher carbon stocks and other ecosystem services. This study combines growth models and allometric equations to forecast carbon sequestration in a C-AFS trial in Cote d'Ivoire. The results suggest that timber trees store more than 45% of aboveground carbon stocks.

Integrated physiological, proteome and gene expression analyses provide new insights into nitrogen remobilization in citrus trees

Huaye Xiong et al.

Summary: In this study, the potential of nitrogen remobilization in citrus was quantified, and the interaction between photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism, and carbohydrate metabolism with nitrogen remobilization was investigated using physiological, proteomic, and gene expression analyses. Citrus trees exposed to low nitrogen showed higher nitrogen remobilization efficiency compared to those exposed to high nitrogen. These findings have important implications for nitrogen fertilizer management in orchards.

On the use of tree-ring area as a predictor of biomass accumulation and its climatic determinants of coffee tree growth

Mayra Alejandra Toro-Herrera et al.

Summary: This study examined the potential of using growth rings as a proxy to understand the climatic determinants of vegetative growth and biomass allocation in coffee trees. The results showed that water balance and maximum temperature were the main factors influencing the characteristics of the growth rings and biomass allocation. Phenology also played a role in modulating the growth cycles and biennial production cycles of the coffee trees.
