The influence of climate change on food production and food safety

Isidro Juan Miron et al.

Summary: This study reviews the impact of climate change on food production and food safety. It found that frequent extreme weather events lead to decreased crop yields, with a greater impact on developing countries. Additionally, higher average temperatures may increase the risk of foodborne illnesses.

Content, modes of occurrence, and significance of phosphorous in biomass and biomass ash

Stanislav V. Vassilev et al.

Summary: The global scarcity, demand, prices and quality of rock phosphate pose significant challenges for food and feed security, as well as industrial phosphorous production. Alternative sources of phosphorous are needed to replace finite phosphate rocks. A comprehensive study on the content, association, modes of occurrence, and significance of phosphorous in biomass and biomass ash was conducted. Phosphorous is highly enriched in biomass and particularly in biomass ash. The water-soluble proportions of phosphorous leached from biomass are substantial, while in biomass ash, the water-soluble proportions are limited due to the formation of less mobile phosphorous phases. Different technological and environmental advantages and disadvantages are associated with the content and modes of occurrence of phosphorous in biomass and biomass ash.

Utilization and recycling of wood ashes from industrial heat and power plants regarding fertilizer use

Elisa Mayer et al.

Summary: To achieve a sustainable circular economy for wood ash, it is important to reuse wood ash in agriculture and forestry. However, the direct application of most ash fractions from the combustion of natural and waste wood is not possible due to high contents of heavy metals. Therefore, further research is needed to develop suitable treatment processes for secondary use of the ash.

A note on the effectiveness of the decline of the carbon intensity on carbon emissions

Jose Goldemberg

Summary: The decline of carbon intensity (CO2/GDP) in countries around the world in recent decades has been well-established, but it has been argued that this decline did not lead to a reduction in global CO2 emissions due to the offsetting effect of GDP growth. We quantified the reduction of CO2 emissions in the period 2000-2018 in 14 countries and the European Union (EU) resulting from the effectiveness of carbon intensity changes. In the US, Japan, and the EU, these changes led to a significant decline in CO2 emissions, while other countries experienced reductions of 10-40%. However, Iran and Saudi Arabia saw an increase in emissions.

Evaluation of the effects and interactions of initial chlorine and sulphur contents on the release of potassium compounds during biomass combustion

Wenhan Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of chlorine and sulphur release on the release of potassium compounds during biomass combustion. The results show that increasing chlorine content promotes the release of HCl and KCl, while inhibiting the release of KOH and K2SO4. On the other hand, increasing sulphur content only significantly affects the release of KOH and K2SO4 at high temperatures. The presence of chlorine and sulphur influences the formation and release of potassium compounds through different mechanisms.

Wood Ashes from Grate-Fired Heat and Power Plants: Evaluation of Nutrient and Heavy Metal Contents

Hans Bachmaier et al.

Summary: This study examined the suitability of ashes from biomass heat plants as fertilizers, finding that while most bottom ashes met the heavy metal limits set by German regulations, there were still some pollutants exceeding the standards, and cyclone ashes contained high levels of cadmium, lead, and zinc. The main nutrients in the ashes were found to be suitable for fertilizers if pollutant limits are met, highlighting the importance of quality assurance systems in biomass heating plants.
