A numerical study of elastocaloric regenerators of tubular structures

Yuxiang Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, an improved tubular nickel-titanium elastocaloric regenerator was proposed to enhance the cooling performance in compression-loaded regenerative systems. A numerical model was developed to evaluate the cooling performance, and a spiral-shaped regenerator design was demonstrated to significantly improve the maximum cooling power and temperature span compared to a plain tube design. These findings suggest that the numerical model provides a promising pathway for developing energy-efficient elastocaloric cooling systems.

Enhancing cooling performance of NiTi elastocaloric tube refrigerant via internal grooving

Jiongjiong Zhang et al.

Summary: Developing novel heat transfer surface structures on NiTi shape memory alloy tubes has been shown to improve elastocaloric cooling performance. This study designed and fabricated an internally grooved superelastic NiTi tube and optimized the geometric parameters of the grooves. By using a buckling prevention frame, the grooved NiTi tube showed significantly enhanced cooling power and fatigue life in a compressive regenerative elastocaloric cooling prototype.

Ultrahigh cycle fatigue deformation of polycrystalline NiTi micropillars

Peng Hua et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that micropillar polycrystalline superelastic NiTi has a longer fatigue life under compressive stresses of 1 GPa and 1.5 GPa compared to bulk polycrystalline NiTi samples. This is attributed to the elimination of internal micro-voids and surface scratches in the micropillars, which suppress crack nucleation and propagation mechanisms.

Cascade utilization of low-grade thermal energy by coupled elastocaloric power and cooling cycle

Suxin Qian et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel elastocaloric cooling system that utilizes low-grade thermal energy in a cascade manner, with a transition temperature gradient inside shape memory alloy actuator for optimal efficiency. The system shows at least 10% improvement in efficiency and cooling power density compared to linear profiles, and has the potential to be powered by solar thermal collectors for residential air-conditioners and off-grid refrigerators.
