Beyond third-order optical nonlinearities in liquid suspensions of metal-nanoparticles and metal-nanoclusters

Albert S. Reyna et al.

Summary: Various nonlinear optical phenomena observed in liquid suspensions of metal nanoparticles and metal nanoclusters have attracted significant attention. These phenomena, such as multiphoton absorption and optical solitons, have been studied in soft-matter systems, resulting in new discoveries and support for theoretical predictions. Colloids containing noble-metal nanoparticles and nanoclusters exhibit outstanding nonlinear optical responses and have been used to study different phenomena and applications. The effective high-order nonlinearities of metal colloids have been investigated using appropriate methodologies for different sizes and morphologies of metal nanostructures. A nonlinearity management procedure has also been discussed to control the nonlinear optical response of metal colloids. Various phenomena associated with effective high-order nonlinearities have been explored, including self-action effects, saturated multiphoton absorption, and spatial solitons.

Effects of frequency-dependent Kerr nonlinearity on higher-order soliton evolution in a photonic crystal fiber with one zero-dispersion wavelength

Saili Zhao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the evolution of higher-order solitons in photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with frequency-dependent Kerr nonlinearity can be greatly influenced by the relative positions of the zero-nonlinearity wavelength (ZNW) and zero-dispersion wavelength (ZDW) with respect to the input wavelength. By controlling the nonlinear dispersion, the position of ZNW and the strength of doping Kerr nonlinearity can be varied, leading to significant changes in the general process of higher-order soliton evolution in PCFs. Some interesting phenomena, such as blueshifted and redshifted fundamental solitons, soliton tunneling, and the generation of high-intensity dispersive waves, are observed in PCFs with one ZDW and one ZNW.
