Development and Characterization of Chitosan and Beeswax-Chitosan Coated Biodegradable Corn Husk and Sugarcane Bagasse-Based Cellulose Paper

Aastha Bhardwaj et al.

Summary: This study focuses on developing paper from agricultural waste, specifically corn husk and sugarcane bagasse, and enhancing their properties through chitosan and beeswax-chitosan emulsion coatings. The results show that sugarcane fibers have better mechanical strength compared to corn husk fibers and that chitosan coating significantly improves the mechanical properties of the paper. Beeswax-chitosan emulsion coating is found to be the best among the tested coatings for enhancing the barrier properties of the cellulose papers.

High Barrier Sustainable Paper Coating Based on Engineered Polysaccharides and Natural Rubber

Azin Adibi et al.

Summary: The demand for paper-based packaging as an alternative to single-use petroleum-based polymers for food packaging is increasing. However, traditional paper formats lack sufficient barrier performance. This study used enzymatically polymerized microcrystalline glucan (MCG) as an additive in natural rubber coatings, resulting in optimized barrier properties. The NR/MCG coatings exhibited excellent mechanical properties and barrier performance, making them a sustainable alternative in the food packaging industry.

Development and Characterisation of Arabinoxylan-Based Composite Films

Joana Salvada et al.

Summary: The overuse of synthetic polymers in the packaging industry in the last decades has become a serious global environmental problem. To tackle this issue, alternative materials, such as biodegradable biopolymers extracted from agro-industrial residues, have been studied for food packaging. In this study, arabinoxylan, a polysaccharide extracted from corn fiber, was used to produce composite and multilayer films. The multilayer films showed superior barrier properties and mechanical performance compared to the composite films.

Summary: The preparation and characterization of biodegradable films based on starch-PVA-nanoclay by solvent casting were reported in this study. Nanoclay dispersion in the polymeric matrix of starch-PVA is improved by sonication, leading to better physicochemical properties. Incorporation of 0.5% w/v sonicated nanoclay into the matrix starch-PVA results in a film with improved properties, while concentrations higher than 1.0 w/v saturate the polymer matrix, affecting the physicochemical properties negatively.
