Study the multiferroic properties of BiFeO3/Ni0.1Fe2.9O4 for heavy metal removal

Rania Ramadan

Summary: In this study, multiferroic substances BiFeO3 and nickel-doped magnetite were synthesized by flash and co-precipitation methods, respectively. The presence of two phases was confirmed through XRD, SEM, and FTIR analysis. The dielectric properties of the BiFeO3/Ni0.1Fe2.9O4 nanocomposite were investigated under temperature and frequency variations. The composite material showed efficient removal of heavy metal (Cr6+) from wastewater through adsorption based on Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics.

Natural, low-cost adsorbents for toxic Pb(II) ion sequestration from (waste) water: A state-of-the-art review

Peter Olusakin Oladoye

Summary: Amongst various wastewater treatment approaches, adsorption is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method for removing Pb(II) ions from contaminated water. This review selected and evaluated about 227 research and review based publications on adsorption-based studies using different materials as adsorbents of Pb (II) ions. The results showed that unmodified and modified agro-based adsorbents exhibited the highest Pb(II) adsorption capacity compared to other types of adsorbents, indicating their potential for further exploration.

Interplay of multiple structural phase and magnetic response of Bi1-xPrxFeO3 ceramics

L. T. Ha et al.

Summary: This study reports the detailed structural phase transition induced by chemical substitution in Bi1-xPrxFeO3 polycrystalline ceramics. Pr3+ substitution is found to destabilize the polar R3c symmetry due to the chemical strain effect caused by the large ionic radius mismatch at the Bi-site. The R3c rhombohedral phase can only be stabilized up to 14 mol% of Pr doping; the phase transition starts to appear at a higher Pr concentration, forming a morphotropic phase boundary between the R3c rhombohedral and Pbam orthorhombic phases. Increasing Pr concentration causes the magnetic transition from a pure antiferromagnetic to a weak ferromagnetic state due to the evolution of crystal structure.

An insight to the filtration mechanism of Pb(II) at the surface of a clay ceramic membrane through its preconcentration at the surface of a graphite/clay composite working electrode

Lubna Jaber et al.

Summary: This study describes the use of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear scan anodic stripping voltammetry (LSASV) to predict the selectivity of microfiltration ceramic membranes made from local clay towards Pb(II) ions filtration. The results show that clay plays a substantial role in the sieving of heavy metal ions and successfully filters Pb(II) ions.

Novel iminepyridinium -modified silicas as super-adsorbents for metals ions

Karolina Wieszczycka et al.

Summary: In this study, novel bifunctional iminepyridinium-silicas were fabricated for the effective removal of toxic metals from waste water. The synthesized materials showed high adsorption capacity for Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) and demonstrated excellent performance in terms of pH, contact time, and ability to withstand the presence of coexisting ions. Among the materials, MBr-D4IA exhibited the highest adsorption capacity for Pb(II) and Cd(II), while also co-extracting Cu(II) from synthetic waste solutions at a rate of 79%. These findings indicate the potential of these novel adsorbents for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with toxic metals.

Effect of pyrolysis temperature of biochar on Cd, Pb and As bioavailability and bacterial community composition in contaminated paddy soil

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of pyrolysis temperature on the bioavailability of Cd, Pb, and As in contaminated paddy soil, as well as the bacterial community structure. The results showed that biochar decreased the bioavailability of Cd and Pb, with wood sawdust biochar performing better than peanut shell biochar. The pyrolysis temperature had no significant effect on Cd bioavailability, but higher temperatures resulted in decreased Pb bioavailability. The feedstock played a more important role in altering bacterial diversity and community composition than pyrolysis temperature. The addition of peanut shell biochar increased the diversity of soil bacteria through elevating soil dissolved carbon. Overall, biochar can be an effective tool in reducing the bioavailability of heavy metals in contaminated soil.

Heavy metal pollution and the role of inorganic nanomaterials in environmental remediation

Michael B. Mensah et al.

Summary: Contamination of water and soil with toxic heavy metals poses a significant threat to human health. This paper reviews the use of inorganic nanoparticles as nanoadsorbents for efficient removal of heavy metals from water, highlighting the importance of parameters such as synthesis method, selectivity, stability, regeneration, and reusability. Surface functionalized nanoadsorbents were found to be highly selective and effective in removing heavy metals from water, even at low dosages, making them superior to conventional adsorbents in environmental remediation.
