Correlations of multiscale structural evolution and homogeneous flows in metallic glass ribbons

Jiacheng Ge et al.

Summary: Studying the flow behavior of amorphous solids is crucial for understanding their deformation mechanism, but detecting basic flow events in these materials is challenging. Using simultaneous SAXS/WAXS experiments, researchers have identified elementary flow carriers in wound metallic glasses, with a radius of gyration ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 nm, based on flow-induced structural heterogeneities. The size of these carriers increases and their morphology changes from spherical to rod-like during flow. Additionally, the atomic structure undergoes an unusual change to a more disordered state during winding/annealing at a temperature around 0.8 Tg. This work provides an atomic-to-nanoscale description of flow carriers in amorphous solids during deformation.

An anomalous structure disordering in Zr-Cu-Ag supercooled glass-forming liquids

Yu Lou et al.

Summary: An anomalous ordering-to-disordering transition in a Zr-Cu-Ag supercooled glass-forming liquid was observed using in situ high-energy x-ray diffraction. Heating the supercooled liquid showed a structural crossover at Tc = 716 K, as indicated by changes in the statistical characteristics of the first sharp diffraction peak. Annealing the supercooled liquid near Tc initially led to relaxation towards a denser and more ordered state. Eventually, the liquid became disordered at a medium-range scale, with a slow densification process.

Unconventional floppy network structures in titanate glasses

Xuan Ge et al.

Summary: Annealed titanate glasses have a flexible network structure that can be modulated by annealing temperature, which is different from the structural changes in traditional network glasses. The rearrangement of the network in barium dititanate glass occurs in a non-monotonic, two-stage process. The irreversible change in network connectivity is attributed to the development of crystal-like cationic motifs.

Nanoheterogeneity response in large-magnetostriction Fe-Ga alloys: An in-situ magnetic small-angle neutron scattering study

Changsheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the underlying mechanism of large magnetostriction in Fe-Ga alloys through in-situ magnetic small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The results reveal that the reorientation of nanodomains relevant to face-centered-tetragonal L6 0 nanoprecipitates occurs at relatively lower fields than that of the magnetic domains, contributing to the low-field-triggered large magnetostriction. It is also found that the correlation length can be effectively tuned by simple heat-treatment, which enhances the magnetostriction without enlarging the triggering field.

Nickel-molybdenum-niobium metallic glass for efficient hydrogen oxidation in hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells

Fei-Yue Gao et al.

Summary: The cost of fuel cell systems can be greatly reduced by developing hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells (HEMFCs) based on platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) catalysts. Nickel-molybdenum-niobium metallic glasses are reported as PGM-free hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) catalysts, which demonstrate excellent catalytic performance and stability in alkaline electrolyte. They enable high power densities in H-2/O-2 and H-2/air fuel cells with negligible performance degradation.

Rejuvenation by enthalpy relaxation in metallic glasses

Y. H. Meng et al.

Summary: Structural relaxation and subsequent rejuvenation through thermal treatment can improve the plasticity and fracture toughness of metallic glasses. The recovery of loosely packed regions in the atomic structure during annealing contributes to the observed rejuvenation. Tailoring the mechanical properties of metallic glasses can be achieved by controlling the annealing and thermal treatment conditions.

Strong Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy Arising from Metal-Ligand Covalency in a Metal-Organic Candidate for 2D Magnetic Order

Yiran Wang et al.

Summary: Layered metal-organic frameworks show promise as new 2D magnets, with strong uniaxial anisotropy observed in the magnetic properties of (NMe4)(2)[Fe2L3]. Density functional theory calculations suggest that magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the framework material arises from ligand-to-metal charge transfer, providing a foundation for the development of 2D magnets. This material has potential as a new 2D magnetic semiconductor due to its large magnetic anisotropy and semiconducting character.

Effect of Joule heating on giant magnetoimpedance effect and magnetic properties of Co-rich microwires

P. Corte-Leon et al.

Summary: The influence of Joule heating on hysteresis loops and giant magnetoimpedance effect of Co69.2Fe3.6Ni1B12.5Si11Mo1.5C1.2 glass-coated microwire was studied. Joule heating can prevent magnetic hardening and lead to a remarkable improvement in GMI ratio compared to conventional furnace annealing. The observed magnetic softening and GMI ratio improvement are attributed to magnetic anisotropy induced by the Oersted magnetic field during Joule heating and relaxation of internal stresses.

Summary: A nanocrystalline CoCrFeNiMn high-entropy alloy with nano-multiphase structure was prepared by laser evaporation source using inert gas condensation, exhibiting unexpected ferromagnetic behavior and significantly increased Curie temperature. The saturation magnetization and Curie temperature of the alloy can be controlled through heat treatment, attributed to the formation and structural evolution of magnetic nanophases during annealing, expanding the design toolbox for high-performance nc-HEAs based on laser-IGC technique.

A medium-range structure motif linking amorphous and crystalline states

Si Lan et al.

Summary: Amorphous materials lack long-range order but exhibit ordered structures at short and medium range, with the nature of medium-range ordering often remaining elusive. A study of an intermediate crystalline cubic phase in a Pd-Ni-P amorphous alloy revealed a six-membered tricapped trigonal prism cluster (6M-TTP) as the medium-range ordered structure. The structural link between the amorphous and crystalline phases at the medium-range length scale was demonstrated, highlighting the role of 6M-TTP clusters in distinguishing crystalline and amorphous phases.
