Effect of SiC Nanoparticle content on the properties of Ni-W-SiC nanocomposite thin films deposited by pulse current electrodeposition

Tianxiang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, Ni-W-SiC thin films were fabricated on mild steel plates using pulse current electrodeposition. The films showed a smooth and homogeneous surface structure with well-distributed SiC nanoparticles, regardless of the starting SiC content. The thicknesses of the deposited films were determined to be 27.3 and 22.2 μm for 9 and 12 g/L SiC content, respectively. The addition of SiC nanoparticles led to decreased crystallite sizes and increased microhardness. However, the hardness values of the films decreased when the SiC content increased from 9 to 12 g/L. The film deposited with 9 g/L SiC content demonstrated excellent corrosion resistance, making it suitable for applications in water or oil pipes, metal containers, and agricultural machinery.

Mechanical Behaviour of Hard Chromium Deposited from a Trivalent Chromium Bath

Robin Guillon et al.

Summary: Due to new environmental directives, hexavalent chromium baths are no longer allowed for electroplating thick hard chromium deposits. This study focuses on the mechanical characterization of trivalent chromium deposits and investigates properties such as hardness, stiffness, yield strength, and toughness. The microstructure of the deposits, determined by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, and the composition characterized by glow discharge spectrometry, are considered in explaining the differences in mechanical properties between trivalent chromium and hexavalent chromium deposits.
