The Dual Benefit of Plant Essential Oils against Tuta absoluta

Saoussen Ben Abdallah et al.

Summary: This study examined the effectiveness of five plant essential oils (PEOs) in controlling Tuta absoluta and their impact on the predator Nesidiocoris tenuis. The PEOs from Achillea millefolium and Allium sativum significantly reduced the infestation by T. absoluta and did not affect the reproduction of N. tenuis. In addition, the spraying of A. millefolium and A. sativum triggered the release of herbivory-induced plant volatiles, which can act as messengers in tritrophic interactions.

The larvicidal effect of neemazal T/S, clove oil and ginger oil on tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta compared to coragen

Doaa M. Ahmed et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the toxicity and biochemical changes in Tuta absoluta larvae caused by neemazal T/S, clove oil, and ginger oil. The results showed that neemazal T/S was more toxic than the detected oils, and the recommended pesticide Coragen had the highest toxicity. Neemazal had the greatest effect on the activity level of most physiological parameters.

Toxicity of essential oils and pure compounds of Lamiaceae species against Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and their safety for the nontarget organism Trichogramma pretiosum (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae)

Camila Silva Bibiano et al.

Summary: This study investigated the insecticidal activity of essential oils (EOs) from plants of the Lamiaceae family against Fall Armyworm (FAW). The EOs from Hyptis marrubioides and Ocimum basilicum showed toxicity to FAW, with multiple active substances identified. Furthermore, these EOs were found to be harmless to the parasitoid Trichogramma pretiosum, suggesting their potential use in integrated FAW pest management programs.

Nanostructured lipid carriers of essential oils as potential tools for the sustainable control of insect pests

S. Tortorici et al.

Summary: Plant essential oils (EOs) have the potential to reduce the environmental impact of conventional management systems. However, their practical application is hindered by various challenges. In this study, Nanostructured Lipid Carriers (NLCs) were used to overcome these challenges and deliver EOs to insect pests. The results showed that the NLCs successfully delivered the EOs and effectively controlled certain pest species.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the toxicity of the essential oils from three aromatic and medicinal plants on tomato leaf miner Tuta absoluta and Medfly Ceratitis capitata as an alternative to conventional pesticides. The essential oils showed insecticidal effects on both T. absoluta larvae and C. capitata adults, with the major compounds varying depending on plant species. These findings contribute to the development of biopesticides for integrated pest management strategies in citrus and tomato crops.

Essential Oils: Pharmaceutical Applications and Encapsulation Strategies into Lipid-Based Delivery Systems

Cinzia Cimino et al.

Summary: Essential oils have been studied for over 60 years, with a growing interest in recent decades due to a renewed focus on natural remedies. These oils have therapeutic properties that have been utilized for thousands of years, but their main limitations include poor hydrophobicity, high volatility, and potential toxicity risks. Strategies such as encapsulation within delivery systems have been successful in enhancing the bioavailability and stability of essential oils. Among these platforms, lipid-based delivery systems such as micro- and nanoemulsions, liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, and nanostructured lipid carriers are particularly promising.
