Effect of surfactants addition on physical, structure and antimicrobial activity of (Na-CMC/Na-Alg) biofilms

A. A. El-Bana et al.

Summary: A polymeric blend of Na-CMC/Na-Alg films with added surfactants was prepared and characterized using various techniques. The addition of surfactants significantly affected the optical and structural properties of the films. FTIR analysis revealed the interaction and complexation between the polymer matrix and surfactants. The band gaps of the films decreased after the addition of surfactants, indicating charge transfer within the polymer structure.

pH-responsive λ-cyhalothrin nanopesticides for effective pest control and reduced toxicity to Harmonia axyridis

Ruiquan Hou et al.

Summary: In this study, pH-responsive LC@O-CMCS/PU nanoparticles were prepared by encapsulating ?-cyhalothrin (LC) with O-carboxymethyl chitosan (O-CMCS) to form LC/O-CMCS and then covering it with polyurethane (PU). LC@O-CMCS/PU showed good alkaline release properties and pesticide loading performance. It exhibited better leaf-surface adhesion and lower acute contact toxicity to Harmonia axyridis (H. axyridis) compared to commercial formulations containing emulsifiers. LC@O-CMCS/PU effectively reduced the toxicity of dew and has the potential to be used in pest control combining natural enemies and chemical pesticides.

Viruses of the Fall Armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda: A Review with Prospects for Biological Control

Ahmed G. Hussain et al.

Summary: The fall armyworm, a native pest species in the Western hemisphere, has spread to Africa, Asia, and Australia since 2016, causing significant crop yield reduction and economic losses. The management options in newly invaded areas mainly rely on synthetic pesticides, but there are concerns about resistance development and negative impacts on the environment and human health. Insect pathogenic viruses, specifically baculoviruses, are being considered as effective, sustainable, and cost-efficient alternatives for biological control against fall armyworm.

Eco-friendly carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogels filled with nanocellulose or nanoclays for agriculture applications as soil conditioning and nutrient carrier and their impact on cucumber growing

Clara R. Bauli et al.

Summary: Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogels were prepared via chemical crosslinking with citric acid and filled with nanocellulose (NC), montmorillonite, or vermiculite in varying contents, showing significant impact on the hydrogel structure and properties. Strong chemical interactions were observed between NC or vermiculite and CMC, enhancing hydrogen bond energies, leading to improved water absorption. The addition of fillers influenced the hydrogel density and water absorption capacity, with montmorillonite showing low compatibility with CMC and doubling water absorption values at low contents.
