Theoretical study on the organic acid promoted dissolution mechanism of forsterite mineral

Chengchen Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, first principles calculation combined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the mineral dissolution mechanism of Mg2SiO4 promoted by different types of organic acids. The results show that the hydroxylation of the mineral surface is caused by the breaking of the H-O bond in the carboxyl group of the adsorbed organic acid molecules, and a greater number of carboxyl groups is more favorable for mineral dissolution.

Energy multi-scale method to analyze the scale effect of soil particles

Jian Chen et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the influence of geometric scale and mineral composition on the surface energy of particles at the microscopic level for development of the energy multi-scale method. The conclusions derived from this work are that the mineral composition and particle size of the soil can cause interface and surface effects, and the energy multi-scale method can explain the mechanism of the plasticity index of soil.

Analysis of the microstructure and morphology of disordered kaolinite based on the particle size distribution

Yongjie Yang et al.

Summary: This study separated and classified three different size distributions of high-defect kaolinite particles from Quaternary sedimentary kaolin in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China. Various techniques were used to monitor the particle sizes and analyze the structure and disorder of the kaolinite. The results showed that the smallest particle size kaolinite had higher degrees of broken bonds and more disordered structure, and the degree of disorder increased as the particle size decreased.

Adsorption of hydrated Al3+ on the kaolinite (001) surface: A density functional theory study

Yuqi Miao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption behavior of hydrated aluminum ions (Al3+) on kaolinite surface using density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulation. The results showed that hydrated aluminum ions preferentially form stable bidentate adsorption complexes on the kaolinite surface, and the Al-Os bond exhibits strong ionicity and bond filling characteristics.

Experimental and DFT study of the sulfidation of smithsonite: Impact of water and oxygen

Yuanjia Luo et al.

Summary: Water and oxygen play a significant role in the sulfidation of smithsonite, but there have been few studies on this topic. This work investigated the impact of water and oxygen on the sulfidation process of smithsonite using flotation tests, XPS measurements, and DFT calculations.

Influence of impurities on adsorption of hydrated Y3+ ions on the kaolinite (001) surface

Hao Wu et al.

Summary: The adsorption behavior of hydrated Y3+ ions on the outer and inner layers of kaolinite surface is studied using density functional theory. The results reveal that the hydrated Y3+ ions adsorb through hydrogen bonding in the outer layer and through Y-Os covalent bonds in the inner layer. The adsorption of hydrated Y3+ ions is significantly promoted by Ca and Mg impurities.

Influence of the defect of carbonaceous surface on ammonium adsorption: A DFT study

Qianqian Yin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption properties of ammonium ions on defective carbonaceous surfaces using density functional theory. Factors such as the location and number of defect sites, as well as the presence of functional groups, were analyzed. The findings provide an important theoretical basis for the targeted modification of carbon materials for ammonium ion adsorption.

Insights into the adsorption mechanism of water at different coverage rates on talc (Mg3Si4O10(OH)2) (001) basal surface: A first-principles study

Yuanjia Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, the adsorption behavior of water on talc surface was investigated using first-principles calculations. The study revealed that water adsorption on the talc surface primarily occurred through hydrogen bonding, and the adsorption was enhanced with increasing water coverage. Furthermore, charge transfer between water and the talc surface led to changes in the surface's work function.

A DFT study of the Pb ion adsorption on smithsonite (101) surface in aqueous system

Yuanjia Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption mechanism of Pb ion on smithsonite surface through DFT simulation, revealing the main adsorption site at the hollow site with an eight-membered ring and the importance of H-bond in stabilizing the adsorption configurations of Pb ion hydrates. The bonding of Pb-O was found to involve the hybridization of Pb 6s and Pb 6p orbitals with O 2p orbital and hybridization of Pb 5d orbital with O 2s orbital, forming PbAO bond with some ionic bond characteristic.

The effect of surface vacancy on adsorption of HS on smithsonite (101) surface: A DFT study

Yuanjia Luo et al.

Summary: The study found that Zn-vacancy defects decreased the reactivity of the smithsonite surface and inhibited the adsorption of HS. The binding of HS with the smithsonite surface varied depending on the specific adsorption sites.
