Medicinal plant use in primary health care: an integrative review

Summary: The use of medicinal plants in Primary Health Care supports a comprehensive approach to care, but there is insufficient knowledge among healthcare professionals about Integrative and Complementary Practices policies and the medicinal uses of plants. Main users of medicinal plants are typically women, elderly individuals, with low income and education levels, either in Brazil or other countries. Safety concerns in medicinal plant use often stem from a lack of correct identification, origin, preparation methods, and appropriate dosages for each case.

Prevalence of chronic diseases and access to health services in Brazil: evidence of three household surveys

Summary: This study analyzed the changes in prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases in Brazil between 2008 and 2019, finding an increase in some diseases and a decrease in others. While the coverage of family health strategy increased over time, there was a reduction in timely medical care and obtaining free prescription drugs among Brazilians with NCDs.

Paving New Roads Towards Biodiversity-Based Drug Development in Brazil: Lessons from the Past and Future Perspectives

Summary: Despite having rich plant resources and traditional herbal applications, Brazil has produced relatively few products in the development of biodiversity-based medicines. This article discusses factors contributing to low success rates and proposes new innovative approaches, such as utilizing the antifragility properties of herbal products and applying circular economy principles for developing new therapeutic agents. These strategies could potentially lead to the development of innovative phytomedicines with global competitiveness.
