Insights into the Edible and Biodegradable Ulvan-Based Films and Coatings for Food Packaging

Optimization of ultrasonic-assisted hot acidic solvent extraction of ulvan from Ulva intestinalis of the Persian Gulf: Evaluation of structural, techno-functional, and bioactivity properties

Summary: This study aimed to optimize the extraction, structure characterization, and determination of technofunctional and bioactivity properties of ulvan from Ulva intestinalis. Through investigations of different extraction techniques, ultrasonic-assisted hot acidic solvent extraction was found to be the most efficient method. Ulvan was predominantly composed of carbohydrates, sulfates, and proteins, with rhamnose, glucuronic acid, glucose, and xylose as the main monomers. The ulvan exhibited satisfactory technofunctional properties and demonstrated significant scavenging activity on DPPH and ABTS+ radicals, as well as inhibition effects on bacterial strains. It also showed impressive antiproliferative effects on cell lines. These findings highlight the great potential of ulvan for pharmaceutical and food applications.

Nutritional Composition of Beach-Cast Marine Algae from the Brazilian Coast: Added Value for Algal Biomass Considered as Waste

However, further study is needed to assess and address any potential contamination by toxic compounds before considering their use for human consumption.

Enzyme assisted extraction for seaweed multiproduct biorefinery: A techno-economic analysis

Green processing technologies, including innovative and environmentally-friendly extraction techniques, have been developed. Using simulation software, researchers demonstrated the feasibility of applying green technologies to extract multiple products from the brown alga Saccharina latissima. Enzyme-assisted extraction was selected as a sustainable technology to simulate the production of alginate and functional saccharides. The simulations were compared to the existing alkaline extraction technique in terms of profitability.

Recalcitrant cell wall of Ulva lactuca seaweed is degraded by a single ulvan lyase from family 25 of polysaccharide lyases

Whey protein hydrolysis with microbial proteases: Determination of kinetic parameters and bioactive properties for different reaction conditions
