Microwave-assisted fractionation of poplar sawdust into high-yield noncondensed lignin and carbohydrates in methanol/p-toluenesulfonic acid

Di Fan et al.

Summary: Production of high-yield noncondensed lignin via fractionation of lignocellulose using p-toluenesulfonic acid in methanol under microwave irradiation was achieved. Microwave irradiation effectively reduced the activation energy of lignin-carbohydrate complex (LCC) bonds cleavage and facilitated lignin exfoliation from carbohydrates. The lignin obtained showed promising yield and could be selectively depolymerized into monophenols with a high yield.

In-situ Mo doped ZnIn2S4 wrapped MoO3 S-scheme heterojunction via Mo-S bonds to enhance photocatalytic HER

Hang Su et al.

Summary: A direct Step-scheme heterostructure of in-situ Mo doped ZnIn2S4 wrapped MoO3 (MoO3@Mo-ZIS) was prepared in this study, and it exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity. The enhanced H-2 evolution rate of the photocatalyst was attributed to the Mo doping and formation of Mo-S species. The direct S-scheme heterojunction of MoO3@Mo-ZIS promoted photogenerated carrier separation and improved the performance of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction.

Structural evolution during corn stalk acidic and alkaline hydrogen peroxide pretreatment

Ying Xia et al.

Summary: Hydrogen peroxide pretreatment combined with saturated calcium hydroxide solution effectively removed lignin and induced hemicellulose solubility in ferrous sulfate solution, facilitating subsequent cellulose conversion. This study demonstrates that oxidative pretreatment is an effective method for refining lignocellulose and enhancing cellulose conversion.

Highly Efficient Fractionation of Cornstalk into Noncondensed Lignin, Xylose, and Cellulose in Formic Acid

Xinyi Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, lignocellulose was effectively fractionated into noncondensed lignin, cellulose, xylose, and xylooligosaccharides using formic acid solution under mild conditions. The formic acid pretreatment protected the ether bonds in lignin, leading to high yield of aromatic monomers. Additionally, the separation of lignin from cellulose increased the porosity of cellulose, resulting in high glucose yield during hydrolysis.

Extraction of Noncondensed Lignin from Poplar Sawdusts with p-Toluenesulfonic Acid and Ethanol

Di Fan et al.

Summary: The novel extraction process using p-toluenesulfonic acid in ethanol successfully recovered 83.74% lignin yield from poplar sawdust, while retaining high amounts of cellulose and hemicelluloses. The major drivers of lignin condensation during fractionation were found to be acid concentration and extraction time. Ethanol reacted with lignin at the a-position to prevent the formation of condensed structures, leading to a promising yield of 50.35% of aromatic monomers during depolymerization over Pd/C catalysts.

Separation of short-chain glucan oligomers from molten salt hydrate and hydrolysis to glucose

Qiyu Liu et al.

Summary: A stepwise method is introduced to hydrolyze cellulose into short-chain glucan oligomers in LiBr MSH, which can be efficiently separated and hydrolyzed into glucose with a high yield. The precipitation efficiency is influenced by the length and type of glucan oligomers.

One-step lignocellulose depolymerization and saccharification to high sugar yield and less condensed isolated lignin

Sunitha Sadula et al.

Summary: The research demonstrates the high yield of glucose and xylose from poplar wood using ZnBr2 salt in a one-step reaction, and the depolymerization and fractionation of MSH lignin using different catalysts lead to the production of higher quality monomers. Techno-economic analysis shows that despite being slower, the ZnBr2 MSH media has cost advantages compared to conventional methods.
