Longshore sediment transport by large-scale lake circulations at low-energy, non-tidal beaches: A field and model study

Anne M. Ton et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of wind and wave-driven currents on the morphodynamics of lake beaches, finding that large-scale lake circulations have a greater influence on nearshore currents compared to wave-driven currents. Through numerical modeling and field measurements, it reveals the influence of wind conditions on the direction and magnitude of lake currents, and identifies the significance of lake circulations in sediment losses of lake beaches.

Monitoring and modeling dispersal of a submerged nearshore berm at the mouth of the Columbia River, USA

Andrew W. Stevens et al.

Summary: A submerged, low-relief nearshore berm was constructed in the Pacific Ocean near the mouth of the Columbia River, USA, using sediment dredged from the adjacent navigation channel. Field measurements and numerical modeling were used to evaluate the transport pathways and physical processes responsible for dispersal of the berm. The study found that the berm was effective in enhancing the sediment supply along the eroding coastline.

Modelling beach morphological responses near coastal structures under oblique waves driven by sea-breezes

Eduardo Lopez-Ramade et al.

Summary: In this study, the Delft3D numerical model is used to evaluate the impact of groins and submerged breakwaters on beach morphology under sea-breeze conditions. The model is calibrated and compared with field measurements to accurately simulate hydrodynamic conditions and morphological changes. New equations are developed to predict shoreline changes near submerged breakwaters under sea-breeze conditions.

Influence of Key Environmental Drivers on the Performance of Sediment Diversions

Ehab Meselhe et al.

Summary: The Delft3D morphodynamic model for Barataria Bay, Louisiana, USA was used to quantify potential land changes in response to a sediment diversion proposal under various environmental drivers. Results showed persistent benefits of the sediment diversion through 2100, with delays in the operation date potentially reducing the net positive land change.

Quantifying Seasonal Seagrass Effects on Flow and Sediment Dynamics in a Back-Barrier Bay

Qingguang Zhu et al.

Summary: Seagrass growth and senescence have significant impacts on flow structure and sediment transport processes in coastal environments. Dense seagrass meadows during summer can effectively attenuate flow, waves, and reduce suspended sediment concentration, while low-density seagrass in winter still plays a crucial role in protecting the seabed from erosion. Changes in seagrass density can lead to significant alterations in sediment flux within the meadows, underscoring the importance of understanding seasonal seagrass impacts on coastal ecosystems.

Morphodynamic modeling of a low-lying barrier subject to hurricane forcing: The role of backbarrier wetlands

Cody L. Johnson et al.

Summary: This study explores the effects of land cover and limited sediment supply on low-lying barrier island morphology under storm conditions using physics-based numerical models. The simulation results indicate that a short-duration overwash regime dominates the morphological change in this low-lying barrier, influenced by backbarrier wetland deterioration. The morphological response to overwash is modulated by backbarrier land cover and topography, indicating that restoration of backbarrier wetlands in conjunction with beach renourishment may be an effective approach to increase the resiliency of low-lying barriers subject to frequent overwashing.

Wave, Tide and Topographical Controls on Headland Sand Bypassing

E. King et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the factors influencing headland bypassing on embayed coastlines and demonstrates predictability under wave-driven conditions. The bypassing rates depend mainly on headland cross-shore length, headland toe depth, and sediment coverage.
