Personalized Pricing and Distribution Strategies

Bruno Jullien et al.

Summary: The availability of consumer data leads to the adoption of personalized pricing policies by an increasing number of firms, which affects the performance and competition between distribution channels. A formal model is developed to examine the choice between mono distribution and dual distribution for brand manufacturers, considering different demand patterns and pricing regimes. The study finds that dual distribution is optimal in many cases, especially when channels are horizontally differentiated and both manufacturer and retailer charge personalized prices.

A Robust Spectral Clustering Algorithm for Sub-Gaussian Mixture Models with Outliers

Prateek R. Srivastava et al.

Summary: In this paper, a robust spectral clustering algorithm is proposed to recover the cluster labels of data points by denoising a Gaussian kernel matrix. The algorithm's performance is analyzed under certain assumptions and is shown to be less sensitive to outliers compared to other state-of-the-art algorithms.

Nonlinear pricing for yield management and countering strategic consumer behavior

Moutaz Khoujaa et al.

Summary: Many retailers use nonlinear pricing, such as Buy one, get one for 50% off (BOGO), to increase sales and counter strategic consumer behavior. This study analyzes the application of BOGO in the newsvendor model and determines its optimal discount and impact on the retailer's profit. The results show that BOGO reduces strategic consumers' chances of obtaining a discount and their incentive to wait, leading the retailer to order a larger quantity compared to a price reduction strategy. The study also highlights the optimal timing of offering BOGO and the robustness of the findings to different factors.

Personalized Pricing and Distribution Strategies

Bruno Jullien et al.

Summary: The availability of consumer data is leading more firms to adopt personalized pricing policies. This study analyzes a brand manufacturer's choice between mono distribution and dual distribution, and finds that dual distribution is optimal in many cases, especially with horizontally differentiated channels. The study also reveals that under vertical differentiation, dual distribution remains optimal when the manufacturer charges a uniform price, while mono distribution may be optimal under personalized pricing, depending on the retailer's ability to expand demand.

Distributionally robust scheduling algorithms for total flow time minimization on parallel machines using norm regularizations

Antonin Novak et al.

Summary: This paper investigates a distributionally robust parallel machines scheduling problem with the objective of minimizing the total flow time. The choice of the l(p) norm used in the objective function is examined in terms of its impact on the computational complexity of the problem and the robustness of the solution. The study demonstrates that for independent job durations, solutions using any l(p) norm can be found in pseudopolynomial time, while for instances with dependent durations, the use of the l(1) norm can improve computational efficiency.

How Does Firm Scope Depend on Customer Switching Costs? Evidence from Mobile Telecommunications Markets

Niloofar Abolfathi et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of switching costs on single-product and multiproduct firms in the mobile telecommunications sector. The results show that when customer switching costs decrease, multiproduct firms experience lower growth and there is a decrease in the entry of multiproduct firms into the market.

Out of the trap: Conversion funnel business model, customer switching costs, and industry profitability

Niloofar Abolfathi et al.

Summary: Reducing customer switching costs can surprisingly benefit companies. Using the telecommunications industry as an example, we demonstrate that a decrease in customer switching costs following mobile number portability increases the profitability of mobile operators. This finding can be explained by a change in companies' business model. When switching costs are high, companies adopt a funnel business model to convert customers from basic to advanced products. However, the diffusion of this business model has a negative impact on average market prices and profitability. A reduction in customer switching costs disrupts the funnel and decouples product pricing decisions, leading to higher industrywide prices and greater profitability.

Learning doubly stochastic and nearly idempotent affinity matrix for graph-based clustering

Julien Ah-Pine

Summary: This paper emphasizes the importance of double stochasticity and idempotency in graph-based clustering, and introduces a new relaxed model that efficiently learns a doubly stochastic and nearly idempotent affinity matrix. The model leverages existing properties between doubly stochastic and idempotent matrices and addresses the resulting optimization problem using an Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and the significance of considering idempotency in graph-based clustering.

The degree measure as utility function over positions in graphs and digraphs *

Rene van den Brink et al.

Summary: The paper explores the comparison of positions in different directed and undirected graphs using utility functions to represent preference relations. By specifying axioms on preferences related to risk neutrality, the study finds the unique von Neumann-Morgenstern expected utility functions for both directed and undirected graphs. The results provide a theoretical foundation for degree centrality as a von Neumann-Morgenstern expected utility function.

Inattention in Contract Markets: Evidence from a Consolidation of Options in Telecom

Bjorn-Atle Reme et al.

Summary: This study investigates customer inattention in the mobile subscription market using data from a large telecom operator. The findings show that a notification about a future price change leads to increased customer attention, which subsequently triggers search, plan switching, and churn. The study also suggests that customers exhibit sophisticated inattention by taking immediate action to mitigate the impact of their own future inertia.

Measuring the Impact of Crowdsourcing Features on Mobile App User Engagement and Retention: A Randomized Field Experiment

Zhuojun Gu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effectiveness of crowdsourcing in enhancing user engagement and retention in mobile gaming apps. It finds that content submission significantly increases engagement and retention, while the ability to access crowdsourced content has a positive effect on retention. However, the interaction between these two features has a negative impact on user engagement. The study also reveals that the impact of crowdsourcing features varies among different user segments.

Consumer Consent and Firm Targeting After GDPR: The Case of a Large Telecom Provider

Miguel Godinho de Matos et al.

Summary: The study found that the enhanced consent requirements of GDPR had a significant impact on consumer opt-in behavior and firm behavior and outcomes. Consumers tended to increase their opt-in for different data types and uses after providing new data allowances, while remaining cautious about permissions for sensitive or tangential uses of personal information. Firms saw increases in sales, marketing communication efficacy, and contractual lock-in after consumers provided new data allowances, due to targeted marketing efforts enabled by these new allowances.

An overview of skew distributions in model-based clustering

Sharon X. Lee et al.

Summary: The literature on non-normal model-based clustering has been expanding in recent years. These models often use a mixture of component densities to provide flexibility in distributional shapes and handle skewness. Skewing is typically achieved by introducing latent variables or considering marginal transformations of the original variables.

A polynomial algorithm for balanced clustering via graph partitioning

Luis Evaristo Caraballo et al.

Summary: Clustering aims to discover natural groups in datasets without assuming any prior knowledge, by detecting inherent separations using a similarity function and formulating the task as a graph partitioning problem. Our algorithm introduces a new cluster quality measure based on variance ratios to compute optimal clustering in polynomial time.

How training on multiple time slices improves performance in churn prediction

Theresa Gattermann-Itschert et al.

Summary: Customer churn prediction models using multi-slicing training approach, which trains models on multiple time slices of data, have shown significant improvement in prediction performance compared to traditional single-slice training. By addressing the rarity of churn samples and potential overfitting, multi-slicing makes the model more generalizable, especially in scenarios where conditions fluctuate over time.
