Effect of Growth Temperature and Atmosphere Exposure Time on Impurity Incorporation in Sputtered Mg, Al, and Ca Thin Films

Shamsa Aliramaji et al.

Summary: Impurities in thin film deposition can come from both deposition process and atmosphere exposure. The impurity incorporation by atmosphere exposure into sputtered Mg, Al, and Ca thin films is studied by varying the deposition temperatures and exposure times. The deposition temperature variation leads to morphological modifications due to surface and bulk diffusion, grain boundary motion, and evaporation. The capping efficiency in hindering oxidation depends on the underlying morphology defined by the growth temperature.

Defects in an orthorhombic MoAlB MAB phase thin film grown at moderate synthesis temperature

Rajib Sahu et al.

Summary: The atomic scale characterization of various defects in a MoAlB phase thin film grown by DC sputtering at a synthesis temperature of 700 degrees C is reported. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals the formation of an intergrown metastable Mo3Al2B4 phase accompanied by thermally stable 90 degrees twist boundaries within the pristine MoAlB matrix. The specific structural nature of these defects, as well as faceted grain boundaries and 3D MoB clusters, is observed.

Low temperature synthesis of dense MoAlB thin films

Simon Evertz et al.

Summary: The temperature range for the formation of single phase, orthorhombic MoAlB synthesized by magnetron sputtering is 450-650 degrees C, with amorphous films forming at lower temperatures and impurity phases forming at 700 degrees C. Diffusion mechanisms play a crucial role in the synthesis of fully dense MoAlB films at 600 degrees C, with surface diffusion mediating below 545 degrees C and bulk diffusion being activated between 545 and 575 degrees C.

Microstructure and Wear Behaviors of Plasma-Sprayed MoAlB Ceramic Coating

Fuzhu Li et al.

Summary: MoAlB ceramic coatings prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying with different arc power levels showed improved wear resistance due to increased density and adhesive strength, resulting in significant reduction in wear rates against GCr15 and Si3N4 counterparts. The main wear mechanisms varied when in contact with different counterparts, but the refinement of wear resistance was consistent.

Direct MoB MBene domain formation in magnetron sputtered MoAlB thin films

Rajib Sahu et al.

Summary: The direct formation of MoB MBene domains in MoAlB thin film by Al deintercalation from MoAlB in the vicinity of AlOx regions is reported. Based on these results, a straightforward processing pathway for the direct formation of MoB MBene-AlOx heterostructures without employing chemical etching is proposed.
