Ternary Ionic-Liquid-Based Electrolyte Enables Efficient Electro-reduction of CO2 over Bulk Metal Electrodes

Jiahao Yang et al.

Summary: Using a ternary ionic-liquid-based electrolyte, this study couples bulk metal electrodes to achieve highly efficient electro-reduction of CO2 to CO. The ternary electrolyte increases current density and suppresses the hydrogen evolution reaction, while maintaining a high Faradaic efficiency. The aggregation behavior of the electrolyte and the arrangement of different chain lengths of ionic liquid cations contribute to the improved wettability, CO2 adsorption, and diffusion channel for H+, resulting in high current density and FECO values.

Enhanced Charge Transfer Kinetics for the Electroreduction of Carbon Dioxide on Silver Electrodes Functionalized with Cationic Surfactants

Wei Jie Teh et al.

Summary: This study shows that the addition of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) to the catholyte can enhance the rate of CO2 reduction to CO on silver electrodes. The researchers found that DDAB lowers the charge transfer resistance for CO2RR on silver, leading to increased partial current densities of CO. However, this improvement is not observed on gold electrodes. Through theoretical calculations and experimental data, it is concluded that DDAB strengthens the adsorption energies of the *COOH intermediate, resulting in enhanced CO production on silver and zinc.
