Deformation Coupled Moire Mapping of Superlubricity in Graphene

Huizhong Bai et al.

Summary: The friction behavior of multilayer graphene-coated substrates is not solely determined by the Moire superlattices, but also by the competition between interfacial Moire superlattices interactions and the out-of-plane deformation of the surface. Thicker graphene coatings exhibit lower intrinsic friction and higher sliding stability due to the spatial distribution of the atomic contact distance.

Molecular Dynamics Study on the Effects of Substrate Grain Boundaries on the Adsorption State of Graphene: Implications for Nanoscale Lubrication

Wanmin Guo et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the adsorption states of graphene on different stainless-steel grain boundary surfaces and reveals the mechanism of how the grain boundaries regulate the surface graphene bulge. It confirms that the type of grain boundaries is related to graphene bulges, and the crystal surface differences and adsorption energy gradients play key roles in regulating the bulge. This provides a theoretical basis for understanding graphene's nanofriction on polycrystalline substrates and its potential application in nano-lubrication of stainless-steel components in microelectromechanical systems.

In-situ TEM studies on stick-slip friction characters of sp2 nanocrystallited carbon films

Xue Fan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stick-slip friction of carbon films with two different crystal structures. In-situ observation and nanofriction tests reveal that the origin of stick and slip is related to shear stress and film deformation. Adhesive deformation results in large stick-slip steps, while ploughing deformation leads to smoother steps. The results from ex-situ tests confirm the findings from in-situ tests.

Graphene transfer methods: A review

Sami Ullah et al.

Summary: Graphene, a material with unique properties, has wide applications in electronics, catalysis, energy, and bio-related fields. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a key method for growing high-quality graphene on non-technological substrates, with efforts towards efficient transfer of the material onto technologically relevant materials. Various graphene transfer techniques are reviewed in terms of contamination control, structural integrity preservation, scalability, cost, and time-effectiveness in this article. Discussions are made on transfer challenges, alternative options, and future developments in graphene technology.

Superlubric polycrystalline graphene interfaces

Xiang Gao et al.

Summary: The investigation of corrugated grain boundaries on the frictional properties of extended planar graphitic contacts reveals a nonmonotonic behavior in friction due to dynamic buckling effects. The resulting negative differential friction coefficients can reduce linear scaling of grain-boundary friction with surface area and restore structural superlubricity at increasing length scales. Achieving ultra-low friction at macroscopic scales is highly desirable.

Mechanisms of frictional energy dissipation at graphene grain boundaries

Xiang Gao et al.

Summary: The study explores the impact of grain boundaries on the frictional properties of graphitic contacts, revealing that frictional energy dissipation over grain boundaries can originate from variations of compressibility along the surface, heat produced during defect (un)buckling events, and elastic energy storage in irreversible buckling processes. These mechanisms may lead to atypical nonmonotonic dependence of the average friction on the normal load. The findings represent an important step towards the understanding of frictional effects of extended grain boundaries.
