Urinary phthalate metabolites and the risk of endometrial polyp: A pilot study from the TREE cohort

Min Zhang et al.

Summary: This pilot study found that exposure to phthalates may increase the risk of endometrial polyp. Certain phthalate metabolites, such as MBzP and SDEHP, as well as the mixture of phthalates, were associated with an elevated risk.

Urinary biomarkers of exposure to drinking water disinfection byproducts and ovarian reserve: A cross-sectional study in China

Yan-Ling Deng et al.

Summary: Experimental studies have shown that exposure to disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water may lead to decreased ovarian reserve, particularly in terms of reduced antral follicle count and anti-Mullerian hormone levels. The findings suggest that urinary levels of DCAA and TCAA are negatively associated with indicators of ovarian reserve.

Associations between urinary bisphenol A and its analogues and semen quality: A cross-sectional study among Chinese men from an infertility clinic

Pan-Pan Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol S (BPS) individually or in mixtures and semen quality among Chinese men. The results showed that higher exposure to individual BPA, BPS, and bisphenol mixtures was associated with impaired semen quality.

Associations of Urinary Trichloroacetic Acid Concentrations with Spermatozoa Apoptosis and DNA Damage in a Chinese Population

Ying-Jun Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) on male reproductive health. The results showed a positive correlation between urinary TCAA concentrations and spermatozoa apoptosis and DNA damage parameters. The findings suggest that exposure to TCAA in real-world scenarios may lead to spermatozoa apoptosis and DNA damage.

Male adiposity, sperm parameters and reproductive hormones: An updated systematic review and collaborative meta-analysis

Albert Salas-Huetos et al.

Summary: This study found that overweight and/or obesity were negatively associated with semen quality parameters and certain reproductive hormones, while also positively associated with high estradiol concentrations. Meta-analysis showed that overweight and/or obesity categories were linked with lower sperm quality, whereas underweight category was associated with low sperm normal morphology. Maintaining a healthy body weight is important for improving sperm quality and male fertility.

Male infertility

Ashok Agarwal et al.

Summary: Infertility affects 8-12% of couples globally, with male factors contributing to around 50%. The causes of male infertility are diverse, requiring thorough evaluation to identify treatable or reversible factors. Semen analysis is key for evaluation, while advanced tests have been developed to investigate sperm quality and function.

Dichloroacetic acid-induced dysfunction in rat hippocampus and the protective effect of curcumin

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the neuroprotective effects of curcumin against DCAA-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and impaired synaptic plasticity in rat hippocampus. Different concentrations of curcumin attenuated DCAA-induced alterations in behavior, neuronal morphology, and biochemical markers. Curcumin activated the cAMP-PKA-CREB signaling pathway, mitigating oxidative stress and inflammation while improving synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus.

The role of oxidative stress in association between disinfection by-products exposure and semen quality: A mediation analysis among men from an infertility clinic

Min Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to disinfection by-products may impair semen quality through inducing lipid peroxidation. The oxidative stress biomarker 8-isoPGF2-(alpha) plays a significant mediating role in the association between urinary TCAA and sperm concentration.

Roles and Knowledge Gaps of Point-of-Use Technologies for Mitigating Health Risks from Disinfection Byproducts in Tap Water: A Critical Review

Baiyang Chen et al.

Summary: Growing concerns over water pollution and affordability have led to a rapid acceptance and development of various point-of-use devices for domestic use. However, there is still a lack of systematic knowledge on the efficiency and mechanisms of POU technologies in removing regulated and emerging DBPs. Additional research is needed to address key knowledge gaps and improve public health protection.
