Constructing coarse-grained skyrmion potentials from experimental data with Iterative Boltzmann Inversion

Yuqing Ge et al.

Summary: Efforts to understand skyrmion behaviour often overlook the interaction potentials but these are key to improve predictive modelling. Here, the authors use an Iterative Boltzmann Inversion technique to construct potentials for skyrmion-skyrmion and skyrmion-boundary interactions from a single experimental measurement, finding the two interactions are exponentially repulsive.

Defect-mediated dynamics of coherent structures in active nematics

Mattia Serra et al.

Summary: Active matter exhibits both orientational coherence and positional coherence. Coherent structures in active nematics, composed of dynamic attractors and repellers, form, move, and deform guided by topological defects. This study characterizes the organization of fluid motion in active nematics using Lagrangian coherent structures, revealing that +1/2 defects play a role as control centers for collective motion. Our work provides insights into self-organization in active fluids and has potential applications in multicellular systems.

Kibble-Zurek mechanism for nonequilibrium phase transitions in driven systems with quenched disorder

C. J. O. Reichhardt et al.

Summary: This study investigates the non-equilibrium phase transitions of superconducting vortices and colloids, and demonstrates that the Kibble-Zurek mechanism is applicable to these transitions. The density of topological defects is measured, and it is found that the defect density scales according to a power law, with exponents falling in the directed percolation universality class. These results suggest that the Kibble-Zurek mechanism can be applied to a broader range of systems exhibiting absorbing phase transitions.

Dynamic ordering transitions in charged solid

Jian Sun et al.

Summary: Group motion is a common phenomenon in nature, and it can be studied by treating objects as collectively moving particles. Research on many-body systems has shown that even the simplest individuals can exhibit marvelous effects. However, studying dynamic ordering and its transitions is often challenging. In this study, electron bubble states formed in a two-dimensional electron gas were used to investigate the dynamics of bubble states using the noise spectrum. The results showed unexpected alternations between dynamically ordered and disordered structures, revealing that dissipative systems can convert between chaotic and ordered structures when tuning global parameters.

Moving smectic phase and transverse mode locking in driven vortex matter

S. Maegochi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic phases of driven vortex matter in an amorphous film and reveals the transition from plastic flow to anisotropic smectic flow and then to isotropic moving Bragg glass. The evidence of a moving smectic phase with higher transverse order than longitudinal order is obtained through the development of transverse mode locking.

Non-reciprocal phase transitions

Michel Fruchart et al.

Summary: The article discusses the impact of non-reciprocity on the collective behavior of multi-body systems in out-of-equilibrium states, indicating that non-reciprocity leads to the emergence of time-dependent phases controlled by exceptional points. The article describes the non-reciprocal generalizations of three archetypal classes of self-organization out of equilibrium, including synchronization, flocking, and pattern formation.

Deriving the skyrmion Hall angle from skyrmion lattice dynamics

R. Brearton et al.

Summary: Magnetic skyrmions are topologically non-trivial magnetic moments that form lattices in helimagnetic materials, showing promise as efficient information carriers. The skyrmion Hall angle, which measures the deviation of skyrmion motion from the driving force, can be determined using reciprocal space techniques. Skyrmions experience deflection under a shear drive, leading to an additional sideways motion known as the skyrmion hall effect.
