Local and global measures of the shear moduli of jammed disk packings

Shiyun Zhang et al.

Summary: Negative shear moduli can be found in jammed packings of repulsive, frictionless disks under strain-controlled isotropic compression. We conducted computational studies to analyze the contributions of these negative shear moduli to the mechanical response of the packings. Our findings reveal different scaling relations and probability distributions for positive and negative shear moduli, and highlight the development of long-ranged spatial correlations in the packings.

Bridging particle deformability and collective response in soft solids

John D. Treado et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of single-particle deformability on soft solids, finding that deformable particles with excess shape degrees of freedom exhibit low-frequency quartic vibrational modes that stabilize packings, even with fewer interparticle contacts. Constraints can rigidify particles, but they may undergo a buckling transition and gain an effective shaping degree of freedom above a certain threshold value. The mechanical response of deformable particles differs significantly from rigid-shape particles, highlighting the importance of particle deformability in modeling soft solids.

The structural, vibrational, and mechanical properties of jammed packings of deformable particles in three dimensions

Dong Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structural, vibrational, and mechanical properties of jammed packings of deformable particles with shape degrees of freedom in three dimensions. The results show that the presence or absence of bending energy in deformable particles leads to different vibrational modes, with significant contributions from shape degrees of freedom to the particles' properties.

Shear response of granular packings compressed above jamming onset

Philip Wang et al.

Summary: In the process of compression, the form of shear modulus is largely determined by affine response, with deviations from this form caused by nonaffine particle motion in near-isostatic geometrical families. Ensemble-averaged shear modulus is not simply a sum of two power laws, but exhibits a complex relationship described by specific characteristic pressures and power law exponents.
