Promising nanocomposites for food packaging based on cellulose-PCL films reinforced by using ZnO nanoparticles in an ionic liquid

Elahe Amini et al.

Summary: A green and efficient method to make hydrophobic polycaprolactone (PCL) compatible with hydrophilic cellulose fibers was developed using an ionic liquid and zinc oxide nanoparticles. Transparent biobased nanocomposite films were obtained by in situ ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone (CL) monomers onto the dissolved cellulose matrix, and showed better mechanical, barrier, and optical properties compared to an all-cellulose composite film.

Antimicrobial effects of thymol-loaded phytoglycogen/zein nanocomplexes against foodborne pathogens on fresh produce

Jingyi Xue et al.

Summary: This study developed thymol-loaded nanocomplexes to improve microbial safety of fresh produce. The nanocomplexes showed significantly stronger antimicrobial activities against foodborne pathogens compared to free thymol control, and the efficacy remained unchanged after storage. The study also found that the nanocomplexes could effectively remove biofilms.

Self-assembled caseinate-laponite® nanocomposites for curcumin delivery

Bai Qu et al.

Summary: In this study, novel self-assembled protein-clay nanocomposites were developed for curcumin delivery. Through pH-mediated dissociation and re-association process, curcumin was successfully encapsulated into NaCas-LAP nanocomposites, which formed smaller particles upon neutralization. The encapsulation performance of these nanocomposites was improved with smaller particle size, showing potential for delivering lipophilic bioactive compounds such as curcumin.
