Navigating through the haemostatic paradox in kidney failure: A practical overview

Jessica Caruana et al.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects approximately 9.1% of the global population, resulting in a significant health burden. Some individuals with CKD may require renal replacement therapy due to complete kidney failure. These patients are at increased risk of both bleeding and thrombosis, making their management challenging. Limited research has been conducted on the effects of antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants in this vulnerable subgroup of patients. This review aims to provide an overview of the current understanding of haemostasis in end-stage kidney disease and discuss evidence-based management strategies for common haemostasis challenges.

Acute Liver Failure Guidelines

Alexandra Shingina et al.

Summary: Acute liver failure (ALF) is a rare, potentially reversible condition that causes severe liver damage and rapid clinical deterioration in patients without preexisting liver disease. Due to limited studies, guidelines provided by the American College of Gastroenterology serve as the official practice recommendations for the identification, treatment, and management of ALF. The guidelines were developed through a process of reviewing scientific evidence and using expert opinions when robust evidence was lacking. Individualized care should be applied in specific clinical scenarios due to the varied clinical presentations of ALF.

Fish liver damage related to the wastewater treatment plant effluents

Natalija Topic Popovic et al.

Summary: This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the impact of wastewater treatment plant contaminants on fish liver structure, physiology, and metabolism. It also examines the role of fish liver enzymes and antioxidants in metabolizing xenobiotic compounds and combating oxidative damage. The vulnerability of fish to xenobiotic compounds and the importance of biomonitoring exposed fish are highlighted.

Chronic Effects of Fluoxetine on Danio rerio: A Biochemical and Behavioral Perspective

Daniela Correia et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of fluoxetine on juvenile zebrafish and found that chronic exposure to fluoxetine may lead to biochemical and behavioral changes, affecting the fish's ability to respond to environmental stressors and interact with other fish.

Fluoxetine-induced neurotoxicity at environmentally relevant concentrations in adult zebrafish Danio rerio

Jose Manuel Orozco-Hernandez et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the neurotoxic effects of fluoxetine on the brain of zebrafish through behavior assessment, oxidative stress determination, and acetylcholinesterase activity measurement. The results showed that fluoxetine exposure disrupted fish behavior, reduced acetylcholinesterase activity, and induced oxidative stress response. These findings suggest that environmentally relevant concentrations of fluoxetine can impair fish behavior and make them more susceptible to predation.

Chronic exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of guanylurea induces neurotoxicity of Danio rerio adults

Gustavo Axel Elizalde-Velazquez et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that guanylurea (GUA) has adverse effects on the growth and development of fish, induces oxidative stress, and disrupts the levels and expression of several genes, metabolites, and proteins related to fish fitness. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential neurotoxic effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of GUA in fish. The results demonstrated that chronic exposure to GUA altered the swimming behavior of the fish, increased oxidative damage, and inhibited acetylcholinesterase activity. Furthermore, GUA altered the expression of several genes related to antioxidant defense, apoptosis, AMPK pathway, and neuronal communication in the brain of the fish.

Antidiabetic drug metformin disrupts the embryogenesis in zebrafish through an oxidative stress mechanism

Gustavo Axel Elizalde-Velazquez et al.

Summary: The study found that metformin accelerates the hatching process of zebrafish embryos and induces various morphological changes, leading to embryo death. Additionally, metformin affects the oxidative balance of zebrafish embryos, resulting in oxidative damage.

Assessing the Mechanism of Fluoxetine-Mediated CYP2D6 Inhibition

Malavika Deodhar et al.

Summary: Fluoxetine is widely used as an antidepressant and is metabolized by CYP450 enzymes, particularly CYP2D6. The strong affinity substrate nature of fluoxetine and its metabolite norfluoxetine can lead to prolonged inhibition of CYP2D6 activity through competitive inhibition. Additionally, fluoxetine is a substrate of CYP2C9 and a mechanism-based inhibitor of CYP2C19.

Time-, dose- and transgenerational effects of fluoxetine on the behavioural responses of zebrafish to a conspecific alarm substance

Asma Al Shuraiqi et al.

Summary: Despite the publication of numerous papers, the effects of fluoxetine on fish behavior remain controversial and contradictory. This study exposed adult zebrafish to various concentrations of fluoxetine and found that the effects varied over time and in a non-monotonic manner, suggesting a complex interaction between the serotonergic system and environmental stimuli.
