Utilization of two-dimensional multicomponent Quasicrystal for NO2 gas detection

S. S. Mishra et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional (2D) materials with large surface area are highly sensitive for sensing. Al70Co10Fe5Ni10Cu5 (Quasicrystal-QC) alloy can be exfoliated into 2D form, exhibiting anisotropic electron-transport properties. The 2D-QC material shows pseudo-conducting behavior and works as an ultrasensitive gas sensor for NO2 at 100 degrees C, with a gas response of 46% compared to its bulk counterpart. Density functional theory simulations support the interpretation of experimental data.

Functional two-dimensional high-entropy materials

Srinivasa Kartik Nemani et al.

Summary: This Perspective discusses the formation, structure and applications of two-dimensional high-entropy materials. These materials combine the characteristics of solid-solution and entropy-stabilized systems with the high aspect ratios and atomically thin characteristics of 2D materials. Currently, there are several types of 2D high-entropy materials, such as transition metal oxides, MXenes, dichalcogenides, and hydrotalcites. However, there is still potential for the development of other types of 2D high-entropy materials.

Plasma-regulated two-dimensional high entropy oxide arrays for synergistic hydrogen evolution: From theoretical prediction to electrocatalytic applications

Shan Ding et al.

Summary: The density function theory (DFT) was used to predict the optimized hydrogen adsorption free energy for plasma-regulated 2D high entropy materials to promote hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Experimental results showed that the fabricated 2D high entropy oxide arrays, treated by Ar plasma to generate oxygen vacancies on the surface, exhibited superior electrocatalytic activity for HER, with stable performance at high current density.

A theoretical study of atmospheric pollutant NO2 on as-doped monolayer WS2 based on DFT method

Shuhan Hou et al.

Summary: Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate the properties of pristine and doped monolayer WS2 (doped with Si, P, Se, Te, As) before and after adsorption of CO, CO2, N-2, NO, NO2, and O-2. The results suggest that P- and As-doped monolayer WS2 can be used as substrate materials for NO and NO2 gas sensors, with P-doped WS2 adsorbing NO and NO2 chemically and As-doped WS2 adsorbing them physically. Additionally, the optical properties of As-doped monolayer WS2 showed greater differences before and after NO2 adsorption compared to NO adsorption, aiding in gas adsorption-related judgments. Further analysis of recovery time, DOS, and PDOS confirmed that As-doped monolayer WS2 is a promising NO2 sensing material.

Summary: This study reports a novel method for the facile synthesis of 2D layered WS2 nanosheets assembled on 1D WS2 nanostructures, enabling ultrasensitive detection of NO2. The WS2 sensors fabricated demonstrate stable, reproducible, and remarkable responses towards NO2 at ppb concentration levels, with high sensitivity and ultra-low detection limits. The material also shows stable responses to NO2 over time, even when operated at room temperature, with humidity cross-sensitivity remaining manageable.

Summary: A study reports the synthesis of multi-principal-element high-entropy M4C3Tx MXenes, including two new high-entropy MXenes and their precursor MAX phases. The research utilized various characterization techniques to determine the structure and distribution of four transition metals in high-entropy MAX and MXene phases, along with first-principles calculations for formation energies. Experimental results show that using three transition metals instead of four can lead to the formation of two different MAX phases under similar synthesis conditions, highlighting the significance of configurational entropy in stabilizing high-entropy MAX phases.
