Synchrotron XPS and Electrochemical Study of Aging Effect on Passive Film of Ni Alloys

Josefin Eidhagen et al.

Summary: Synchrotron-based X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to investigate the aging effect on the passive film of Ni23Cr15Mo and Ni22Cr9Mo3Nb. The corrosion resistance of the two alloys in 1 M NaCl solution was evaluated using electrochemical cyclic polarization measurement. The XPS analysis revealed that the passive film consists of an inner oxide layer and an outer hydroxide layer. Aging in air led to the growth of the Cr-oxide in the inner layer and transformation of lower valence oxides into higher valence oxides in the mixed oxides and hydroxides of Mo and Nb.

Stoichiometry-modulated dual epsilon-near-zero characteristics of niobium nitride films

Yujing Ran et al.

Summary: Metal nitride NbNx films with different nitrogen content were prepared and demonstrated stoichiometry-tunable on lattice constant, chemical state, and plasmonic properties. The films exhibit dual ENZ behavior in the range of 400 to 1000 nm, with tunable negative real part of epsilon below 1.0. Non-stoichiometric defects, particularly cation vacancies, were found to be key factors affecting the ENZ behavior of NbNx films.

The influence of semiconducting properties of passive films on the cavitation erosion resistance of a NbN nanoceramic coating

Jiang Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, a NbN nanoceramic coating was synthesized on a Ti-6Al-4V substrate using a double cathode glow discharge technique to alleviate cavitation damage in hydrodynamic systems operating in marine environments. The coating exhibited good adhesion to the substrate and higher cavitation erosion resistance in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, demonstrating superior corrosion potential and lower corrosion current density compared to uncoated substrate. The experimental observations from Mott-Schottky analysis and first-principles density-functional theory calculations supported the enhanced performance of the NbN coating in reducing point defect density and diffusivity, as well as improving chloride ion adsorption energy in the passive film.
